The base one is only "b" (11Mbps). You need to choose one of the other ones to get "g" (54 Mbps). I chose the Intel Pro 2200 b/g.

8600 vs. 5160
Pentium M 1.6 vs. pentium 4 (533mhz fsb)

If battery life doesn't matter, is there any other reason to get the 8600 ?
I would rather have more power from the P4 than battery life, I am always at a place where I can plug it in

ok well I think 11mbp/s should be fine for googling at the coffee shop This deal is so hot. I almost broke down and purchased a hp laptop (that I like a lot) a few months back. I'm glad I waited.

HI Anyone already have a 9100 ORDERED and want to consider another model?

I will pay you an extra $40 for the purchase?

Ps: What happened. I was trying to help out a Dell salesman I know and give him my order for a 9100. (They dont make commission but they do receive incentives if they make certain sales figures over the month) Anyway he didnt get my order placed in time and they are NOW OUT OF THE 9100 model. They are not sure if they will get more in because the model is being REPLACED with a 9200 in November. (yes that is right, your 9100 is going to be outdated next month. It will have a larger 17" screen)

SO, if you were considering the lighter, more mobile Centrino, here is a chance to score not only the $750 saving and the shipping savings, but also save an extra $40.

BTW I can help you out on sales Tax if you want to ship to DE.

TIA
PM me or preferably: anandtechATphillywoodDOTcom (obvioiusly change the capitalized letters to their respective symbols)

8600 has a better video card option for gaming, the mobility 9600 proturbo

also has wider screen

and processor differences are complicated to compare, with the chipset in the 5160 the p4 isn't necessarily faster than the pentium m 1.6, it's main advantage would be hyperthreading and probably video editing/encoding, but I believe the 852pm chipset is single channel memory, not dual channel like desktop p4s, so I don't know how that would affect it. probably quite a bit compared to a desktop p4, they need lots of memory bandwidth.

600m is the crappiest of crappies in all laptops from what I hear.

Wah?? Havent heard of many peeps having probs with the 600m, Ive got one myself and it has been a flawless machine (used everyday) since I bought it a year ago. Epinions shows pretty good ratings on it too, I'm sure some people dont like them for one reason or another but the people I know that own one including myself, love the 600m.
I may have to pick up another one for my parents, thanks OP.

I've read up on the 600ms and so far they all have very positive things to say. Not sure where you're getting your info icecreamman. From the looks of it, the 600m seems to be the best option as its still just as portable as the 700m but not as small.

We received an official intimation from Dell that this coupon will NOT work on Inspiron 700m and 8600 after 3PM CST. The coupon will work on ALL other models until 5:59AM Tomorrow (10/20)!

So if you are in the market for 700m or 8600, then hurry! Only 43 minutes left!

You will probaby get a re-manufactured unit if you order with this discount, as the word is that dell's trying to unload a defective batch, so instead of writing it off, they came up with this coupon idea.

Man, all these great deals.
I just got the 8600 in I ordered from the 25% and 200 rebate today but decided to return it because this is a better deal. I also configured a better processor and used the $30 off from the big bucks promo. All in all, a great Day.

I just typed 9100 in their search engine but I've read the 9100's sold out early. I tried to get in on one a bit ago and was unable to order.

Seriously, 600M is probably one of the better deal if you are planning to bring your laptop around. It is only less than a lb heavier than the 700M but have a significantly bigger screen. It has a good CPU , the Pentium M as fast or faster than Pentium 4 M running 1Ghz faster, not to mention it consumes less battery.

I have been a laptop user for a long time, and I just bought another 600M just because it is such a good deal and offers the best balance of size, weight and power for a mobile user, IMHO.
