The drives aren't dead, its the MIR. They took down the $50 MIR form on the website but left the expired $10 MIR up there. If you really want the drive, go over to FW or SD for rebate forms, other people have hosted the rebate forms. Its still a YMMV on the rebates though.

Does anyone know if there is a hack firmware that burn dvd-rw for this burner?

I heard that there are 2, one for cyberdrive, another one for Benq. But people said that they have problem with it with DVD-R, either it fails or other dvd player or dvd-rom can't read them at all.

I picked up one of these at my local OM in Atlanta today. They had maybe 20 on hand.

Mine is a rebadged CyberDrive DX082D. Made in China. Searched the web and found the latest firmware (150B) which upgraded the drive to include writing DVD-R and DVD-RW. Confirmed with Nero InfoTool. This firmware has been out less than two weeks.

Getting ready to test it out. I don't have any 8X DVD's, but will see how it goes with 2.4X and 4X DVD+R, a 1X DVD-RW and a 1X DVD-R.

I got the rebate forms from above website and went down and bought two from my local OM. Keeping my fingers crossed.
The $50 rebate said to send a copy OR original UPC and the $25 wants the upc from the box, should work IMO but I'm a noob (for now)

If you could post where you found the firmware and instructions how to update I would appreciate it.

While I am on the subject, does the NEC 2510a need a firmware upgrade?

Thanks all

This noon I had a chat with store manager (we discussed same issue before), he said only the rebate printed out is valid; at least, that was instruction given to him. I asked about the leather chair, which was not only free, but also put money back to the pocket. He explained, when it is house brand item, OM usually honors rebates -- for example, Microadvantage DVD writer, sold only through OM; but not Khypermedia, OM has no control over Khypermedia's rebates. It will be up to Khypermedia to decide.

I probably will keep it, after all, not a bad price.

hrm.... i dunno, it checks out to me... says there in clear writing when the time frame to purchase the item is valid... can't go back on what's in writing... if so, then somebody's gonna get a call from Better Business Bureau and they'll have ti take t up with them....

For the latest CyberDrive firmware:

Google search "dx082d" and follow the first result or ...

150B Firmware

This firmwre provides DVD-R/RW support.

Instal from WinXP. Worked for me.

UPDATE:

Can't burn on any of three different DVD-R and DVD-RW brands tried, although InfoTool shows support.

Also, would not erase a 1X DVD-RW.

However, did burn a SONY 4X DVD+R at 8X with no problem

Thank you SilthDraeth and a BIG THANK YOU to luv2save for bringing us this deal.

One of the rebates says:
Please allow 6 - 8 weeks after claim is received by fulfillment company to receive your >>gift card.<<

+

Offer not valid with >> any other rebates <<, offers or promotions.

Nevertheless, these $50 and $25 rebates are for us risk takers.

If the drive has a headphone jack it is a BenQ DW800A, if it doesn't then it is a CyberDrive DX082D.

I got a Made in Malaysia BenQ DW800A in Kansas City, not CyberDrive DX082D.

hrm.... got the drive, turns out to be a Cyberdrive DX082D and so i updated the firmware to 150B and nero infotool says it can burn DVD-R/RW but tried burning one of my Ritek DVD-R G04's and it wouldn't burn... anybody get the same problem or tried any other brand of DVD-R with this drive?

Update to my earlier post.

Worked fine with a Ritek 2.4X and Sony 4X DVD+R.

However, can't burn to any DVD-R or -RW tried athough InfoTool shows support.

No luck with a CompUSA 1X DVD-R, Maxell 1X DVD-RW and a Khypermedia 4X DVD-R.

In fact, nearly wrecked the DVD-RW disc. Fortunately was able to burn and then erase on a SONY burner.

Got 13 days left to return this puppy to OM.

When you failed to burn those DVD is that mean they are toasted (can't use again) just like CD ?

mine just wouldn't let me burn to Ritek G04's DVD-R, nero says, Please insert any DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW and then i place my Ritek DVD's in, and it says that inside the bay is a DVD-R and that it can't write to this media.... has anyone gotten any DVD-R discs to work with this drive?

shouldn't expect much anyways... its the first firmware with DVD-R support, hopefully they'll put out w/ a better firmware in the near future.... i mean... c'mon.... this thing was free.... *i hope*

No, not always. Simply check for any burn rings. If none, you should try the disk again before chucking it.

What is worse about the Khypermedia? Coasters? Quality of the DVD? My current Pioneer makes good DVDs, but it's only 2x.

Not sure how $56 is cheaper than getting paid $8 or $18 (if using coupon) for the Khypermedia?

$64.95 + tax - $10 (possible coupon) - $25.00 MIR - $50.00 MIR = getting paid a few bucks for the drive!

I agree that the Pioneer may be better....but not the price!
