Looks like ATi is trying to squeeze the most out of their R580 setup instead of going to a more efficient architecture. I've read that R580 uses ~40% more power than G71 and G73.

Nontheless, it looks awesome

No, they are wrong. It can be a three slot solution, if you place the cooler just over the card. However, if you place it in any other empty slot, its a two slot solution. As you can put a card just above the video card, because the two slot stock cooler is no longer there.

Yep not a very difficult concept to grasp here guys, it's not rocket science. This card is very nice, if I didn't have water cooling I'd have gone for this.

Even if you move the cooler 4 slots down it's still taking up 3 slots in your system. The card clearly takes up 2 and the cooler takes up 1. 2+1 = 3.

No it doesnt. The card takes up one, because the stock cooler isnt there anymore. You can put a PCI card in the next slot above the video card.

For my mainboard (DFI SLI NF4) there is room above the PCI-e 16x slot to fit the cooler. I'm pretty sure most other popular mainboards have a similar configuration. Most people don't use that PCI-e 4x slot for anything.

The water cooler goes in the second slot of the video card, exhausting through the video card's second slot. 2 slots.

wow...wow....
This is a nice card but yeah ATI does need to just make some better power efficiancy.
But i dont really understand why you guys care soo much about pci slots?
If i had even 6 slots used up by these 2 cards in CF then id still have room for 1 or 2 PCI cards, and all you really need is a soundcard.
And just if you guys are wondering i dont have a full tower i have a spire black fin (mid tower).

 It's a vendor choice - Gainward pioneered factory watercooled GPU.. guess which accelerator brand they were using?

Anyway OP, I think it's time for you to consider full blown water cooling if contemplating this.. 3 slots is crazy and there is no way that fan can be "silent" too small for that..

Apparently it is rocket science, because even if you move the coooler to another slot 2 slots for the card and 1 slot for the cooler still add up the 3. (2+1 = 3)

The card itself shouldn't take more than 1 slot, why they added the extra PCI slot holder to it is confusing. Like I mentioned above, most people don't use the 4x PCI-e slot that resides above the PCI-e 16x slot in most decent mainboards and that's where the cooler can be placed. So while technically it might take 3 slots, the 3rd slot it takes is useless for most.

The cooler itself affixes itself to an empty pci slot. so that is one gone there, the card is another, and maybe no room for a card inbetween

Jeez you like to argue pointless stuff sometimes. Yes, if you have a dremel you can chop the two slot bracket on card in half and the card will be one slot due to it's thin profile from not having a HS on there and one more slot for the water cooler making two. Forgoeing that mod the card will render 3 of your slots unusable therefore it's a three slot card.

I'm not arguing with you just pointing out that the 3 slots it takes up only matters if you waste PCI space. Placing it above the PCI-e 16x slot doesn't matter for 99% of people out there since hardly anyone uses the PCI-e 4x slot.

It's rediculous, you'd get BETTER heat transfer with the core directly on that large heatsink... A waste if you ask me :-\
