A Louisiana police officer shot and killed a black man during a confrontation outside a Baton Rouge convenience store, authorities said, prompting hundreds to protest at the site where the man died. An online video that surfaced purporting to show the killing of Alton Sterling, 37, of Baton Rouge on Tuesday added to protesters’ outrage. The protest lasted into the night, with people chanting and holding up signs.

Sterling was the father of five. By his family’s account, he sold CDs in the space where he was eventually killed so that he could help provide for his children.

Could also be titled as citizen complains that another man selling items outside a store threatens him with a gun. Police arrive and a fight ensues. Tazing the man yields no result and he continues to fight with police where the suspect reaches for a gun. Police shoot and a gun is found on the suspect.

Shop owner Abdullah Muflahi told the Advocate that the officers were "aggressive" from the start, and that Sterling was armed but was not holding his gun and didn’t have his hand near his pocket at the time of the shooting.

To many people on this forum and elsewhere, behavior like this from cops is a feature, not a bug. As long as people support this sort of thing, cops will continue getting away with it. Lots of people like this sort of thing.

Looks like he was tased, with two cops sitting on him being handcuffed on his stomach when he was shot several times. Suspicious at best.

But given the inherent racism in many areas, I'm sure the cops will get off with a paid vacation as usual, and the cop apologists will claim that the system worked. And another black man will go into the records as being a "good shoot", and another family will be devastated. And then next week another cop somewhere will kill another black man.

...as they should be when responding to an individual threatening others with a firearm.

... Sterling was armed but was not holding his gun and didn’t have his hand near his pocket at the time of the shooting.
He could have been going for their gun. He was struggling/fighting with them, after all.

How about we wait for details before we assemble and march, hmm?

The man had a gun in a pocket. The police were aggressive. I cannot see the man's hands at the time of the shooting.

It's a dangerous situation anytime you confront an armed person. And if they resist? The wrong flinch might be read as reaching for the gun. A split second voluntary or involuntary motion could justify shooting a person. Such confrontations are, by their nature, deadly.

I do not want needless shootings to happen, but if police believe you are armed... they'll probably (should) proceed to detain you which may include raising your arms and turning around. Or whatever it is they'll command to reduce the risk. If you fail to comply... fail to reduce the risk... they'll have to expect the worst. I suspect this is the reason... but I want to know why they tackled him.

What can we have police do differently?

This has the 3 primary ingredients for liberals to lash out without facts:

Police
A shooting
A minority

Those 3 things happen it doesn't matter what the facts are, the cops are wrong. You guys should know this by know.

Yeah sure, the bias exists only on one "side." You can pose the same three basic facts and there are people who will conclude the exact opposite, regardless of the facts.

So far, I'd say the video looks bad for the officers. The man was armed, but he was restrained at the time of the shooting and it doesn't look like he ever had a hand on his gun.

The man is convicted felon. He probably was going for his gun.

Yes, because people can't turn their lives around after serving time...

Perhaps he was selling CDs because he can't get a legit job (due to his record) and has mouths to feed (which he did)?

No doubt, this lame ass excuse you just used is the same one the cops will try to use....even though the store owner said the police were the aggressors and that his gun was in his pocket and he had not reached for it. "Probably" isn't going to cut it. Did he actually reach for the gun or not? If not, this was murder. Good thing the investigation is being turned over for proper follow up.

Illegal possession (as a felon) of a concealed firearm is not grounds for taking someone's life.

You seriously think they're supposed to sit back and watch him go for his gun then wait for him to get his hands on it?! He was already resisting. He crossed that line. ANY movement toward his gun or an officer's gun would have resulted in that outcome, minority or not.

Did he actually go for the gun or not!? Saying that he was resisting doesn't mean they can shoot him on the suspicion that he MIGHT reach for a gun in a pocket that he probably couldnt reach in the first place on account of him being held down.

And I am going with what the witnesses said. The shop owner said that the guy didn't reach for anything.

The shop owner says the video cameras picked up the incident but that the cops immediately came into his store and confiscated the tapes.

I didn't think convicted felons were allowed to own guns. Not exactly a good way to turn one's life around after serving time.

Watched the video against my better judgment...cops are going to need a damn good story to get out of this one. Too bad the victim wasn't white so we could spare some of us all this outrage.
