this is the same as the Shrek promotion they had a few months back...
purchase a card for 10 weeks worth of rentals (1 a week)
and receive LOTR when it is released...

I did this last time with Shrek...
great deal IMHO

The stores in my town are all independently run and don't participate in these deals so, if anyone sees how this can be ordered online (I can't find it at Blockbuster.com ), please post. I was able to take advantage of the Shrek deal online and thought it was a great deal. Thanks!

got in on the shrek deal too. I also think it's a bargain with the rentals you get along with it. anyone know which version of LOTR you get? plain vanilla theater version or director's extended edition? it has to be widescreen of course. and I think there's going to be a third version too, but probably just the director's cut in a collector's box with other stuff.

just had a look around at www.dvdpricesearch.com and the LOTR special edition (full screen or widescreen) is around $17, so that's most likely the version you'll get (theatrical release). director's cut is around $27, so it's not likely to be in the promo (but if it is, totally hot!). you're getting the movie at a good online price plus blockbuster rentals for $1 each, or rentals at $2.50 each (better than usual $3.75) and a free copy of LOTR. whichever way you want to look at it, it's a nice deal, unless you hate blockbuster and don't rent movies and would rather just spend the whole $25 on the director's cut. I'll probably go for it, but most likely give the DVD as a xmas gift and get the director's cut for myself and use the rentals of course.

Isn't this a used copy of LOTR like Shrek or am I confusing this with another deal?

Besides, LOTR Retail edition has already been ripped, even though the release date is 8/6. The extended edition and collector's gift set are released 11/12. I'll wait for the extended edition.

Nice find, I also did this with Shrek for $25 with 10 free rentals. You figure the Shrek DVD was $16.99 (at BB) so you paid $8 for 10 rentals, not bad.

Someone on another board which must remain nameless said that their Blockbuster told them Jun 25 for the start date.

Sorry if anyone has already asked this, but is this for new release or their blockbuster "favorites".

And according to rumor (or myth?) the special special edition LOTR is supposed to be 5 dvds long, though I think the "normal" edition, is much smaller.

Do you have to rent the movies 1 per week? Could you, say, rent 2 per week for 5 weeks?

Last time it was max 1 per week and if you missed a week you lost the opportunity to use that rental. The week started on the first day you rented, so, Thursday Would probably be a good day to start the first one, at least for me. Then your new weeks start on Friday each week... when you are probably most likely to rent a movie over the weekend.

I went to BB today and, sure enough, it hasn't started yet. Will have to go back on Sat/Sunday b4 noon to return my movies, so, will check again then.

The Director's Cut is coming out in November, so this deal is for the theatrical release version.

In California, there is supposed to be a law that prevents Blockbuster from requiring you to use up all 10 of your rentals in 10 consecutive weeks.

I found this out from a Blockbuster manager when I was asking them how many rentals I had left on my card from the Shrek deal.

If you live in California, and you get the rental card, you can rent out 1 free rental per week on the card, but they don't have to be on consecutive weeks and you will not lose any of the rentals if you skip any week. I still have one left on my Shrek rental card from months ago that I still have to use.

goddammit you hobbits... why do you have to say LOTR instead of Lord of the Rings? I had to google search LOTR before I knew what the hell LOTR stands for.

Yeah same here, like I really would know what LOTR means. I was just waiting for someone like you to ask the question!
