that was pretty much what I wanted. I'm also surprised that a dual screen android flip phone never came into being.

But kidding aside, that is the whole point of retina displays.

Big phones are for people who pay attention to processor benchmarks and know the exact frequency range of their phone.

Not sure I agree with that honestly. I couldn't tell you what my Note 2 processor is clocked at without looking it up nor do I care one bit about mobile benchmarks. I just like the big screen. Just as I prefer my 52" TV over my old 19" model, I prefer the large screen on my Note 2 over my previous phone's small screen (iPhone 4S).

Because of heat, power requirements, component cost, size of the device, etc.

If an LG G2 at 5.2" has 1920x1080 IPS, 2.2Ghz quad core Adreno 330 and 3,200mAh battery, how do you expect to fit ANYTHING similar specswise into a phone that is ~4.5"

It would be more likely to over heat, it would have a smaller battery unless it was super thick, it would have a lower res. screen unless they pay more for better screen quality causing the price of the device to increase. I mean, it just wouldn't work.

So you're looking at a "high end" small footprint device that costs $800+ unsubsidized, most carriers likely wont carry it because it's a niche device so subsidies will be small. The device will likely run hot and have poorer battery life than it's full sized counterparts, unless it's a super chunky phone

So you're telling me that I can't fit my OCed 4770k into a intel NUC like box? What?
Do companies just not like money? Why won't they cater to me! I'm sure there is a HUGE market for this type of product why won't they release it!

Couldn't be more wrong. I consider myself a tech geek and even I don't look at phone benchmarks, I think they're pointless since 90% of them don't show you what real world usage is like.

Do you really think the millions upon millions of people that have bought large screen phones to date all look at and care about benchmarks?

I don't think the Z1 Compact is a great example - it's a 4.3" screen in a 4.7" body (Moto X). So no, they didn't do anything amazing in packaging, they just made it smaller than the equally oversized Z1 (compared to its competitors). Can someone make a true 4.7" flagship phone with top of the line specs in the Moto X body size? I don't know.

The iPhone is a tough comparison since the closed Apple ecosystem has so many advantages in that it doesn't need equivalent hardware for a top of the line experience. So I don't think a sub-720p screen, 1GB of RAM, a dual core CPU, and 1560 mAh battery are workable specs for Android.

This isn't the first thread where people go on and on about how the Z1 compact isn't small because it's in the body of a 4.7" phone. You do realize that's not really the case, right? I'll copy and past what I said in the Z1 Compact thread:

Not really, no.

Z1 Compact: 127 x 64.9 x 9.5
HTC One Mini: 132 x 63.2 x 9.3
Galaxy S4 Mini: 124.6 x 61.3 x 8.9

Moto X: 129.3 x 65.3 x 10.4
HTC One: 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3
Lumia 1020: 130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4

It's smaller, albeit slightly, than the Moto X in every dimension, and the Moto X is regarded as strikingly compact for its size, not a regular mid-sized device. Compare it to the HTC One or the Lumia 1020 and it's not even close. It clearly fits in with the other "Mini" phones, it's only close to the Moto X because it is very small for its class, not because the Z1 Compact is large.

my Nokia 8260 and Sony Ericsson T68 are in my junk drawer...compared to iphone 4 and Note 3....LOL

I had the t68 back in 2002! That phone was amazing for its era. And it was surprisingly durable, too. Still have it lying around somewhere. I also had the ol' Nokia 8290, although I don't have that one anymore.

The Galaxy S 4 pushed my limits of size. I would not want it any bigger than that. I actually like the 4.3/4.7 size.

I dont think I own any pants my 5.2" LG G2 wont fit in...unless all your friends are female, i call bullshit.

Well, no, I don't have female friends, cause I'm a geek and I wear glasses.

Happened this very afternoon. Made a call to my mate who had just called me, wouldn't pick up...

Besides, I know 5.2 inch fits in my pockets, just like my 7.5 inches fit in my pants. It's not comfortable, or practical, and certainly hinders agility. My cellphone is 3.2, as I said, and as little as it is, I still worry that I might break it every time I lean down or something.

I call BS, and I know BS because they are my initials...

I have a company provided iP5S and an HTC One and carry both of them with me most of the time. The One goes in my front left pant pocket and the iP5S goes in my rear left pant pocket with no problem whatever!

All you guys whining about big phones are going to be really crying when the next iPhone comes out and is near 5 inches! You complain about phones being too big then whine about your screen being too small -- Jesus, make up your mind...

I've had the One for a year and am in no hurry to replace it, but when I do, probably a year from now, the replacement will likely be over 5" screen size and will likely have 2560x1440 or there about's.

Brian
Well, BS, I understand what you're saying, but I know how my friends use their phones: not in their pockets.

Unless they're walking or something, which is unusual. If their at work, they have it stashed somewhere, if they're playing, they have it stashed somewhere, if they're driving, they have it stashed somewhere. It's always somewhere that's NOT their pocket.

Me? I always have it on my pocket, unless when I'm sitting down at my desk for long periods of time, because, as tiny as 3.2 is, it still bothers me.

I don't get the obsession people have with small phones, after owing a Note 3 I have no desire to downgrade to a sub 5.7" screen

It's personal taste. I don't get why people are so against a flagship at 4.5", 5.0" and 5.5", and hell even 6.0"
Who's against it? What's funny to me is that people act like those of us with larger phones are personally keeping you from your small dream phone. Yeah, I just got off the phone with the manufacturers telling them to nix the tiny flagship.

Or maybe they're just not making that because they can't sell it?

That's pretty much it. They're complaining that the rest of the market (us) won't go along with their wishes. Some are even offended by wishes that don't match their own, hence someone publishing a rant about phones being too big when there's still plenty of devices in the 4 inch range out there.

your poll choices are really biased. while i dont fully agree with the article, your choices are stupid. i love my huge note 3, it serves a purpose in my work life, as well as my large hands. i also think there should be smaller phones available with the same spec level as the newest flagships for people that dont want or cant handle the big phones. and jobs was wrong, 3.5" has always been too small. its just the standard at the time was lower than 3.5" so it seemed huge when it was new. the perfect size phone for me would likely be about 4.5"-5" but for work use i need much more screen real estate for remote connections, doc viewing, research and stuff like that.

It's market driven, they're not making the larger phones because they feel like it.

more like its PROFIT driven

they can force us all to buy the flagship at a nice profit margin by not making anything else decent for us to buy

the razr m and droid mini were pretty low end. but I loved the size

If the only thing you consider "decent" is the flagship, then it's probably not overpriced, you're just under-funded.

Err, there seem to be more people in this thread who like large phones telling everyone else to shut up (or buy an iphone). It's as if they're afraid that anyone asking for smaller phones threatens the existence of larger ones.

No, we're simply pointing out that the market has spoken, and even though it has, there are still quite a few choices in the 4-5 inch range anyway.

The fact is, even though larger screens are quite popular, particularly as flagships (thank the availability of streaming video among other things) there are many choices in the mid-range as well. Those who are offended by the existence of either, frankly need to get help.

I think that alot of ones preference in phone has alot to do with their everyday activities. Some people use their phones mostly for calls and texts. Others, like myself, get use their phone mostly for email and web. I receive 100+ emails every day across 6 different email accounts. 70% of those emails have attachments that I need to look at or require me to check my calendar or check the web for something before I respond. One could argue that I should just use my computer for these things that require visual real estate. However, my desk is located at one fixed point of a property that I manage. There are hundreds of thousands of square feet worth of actual real life space that I have to walk to and from throughout the day for one task or another. So to go all the way from where I am to where my computer is just to appropriately respond to an email is just plain inefficient. And most importantly how else am I expected to truly appreciate my cousins wedding photos on Facebook no matter where I am if I dont have a screen with sufficient surface area? For me (and quite obviously millions of others) bigger truly is better.

The thread is about some dude's rant about hating today's smartphones because someone won't make exactly the size/stats phone he wants. I think most people were responding to that being pretty silly.

I say ask for the SS Minnow flagship all anyone wants....just why not go ask Samsung or Apple or whoever for it? Why act like people who find it a silly thing to rant about have anything to do with it?

Because this is a discussion forum on one of the biggest tech sites? i.e. a place where people can discuss ideas?

How does that answer my question? Are peoples smartphone choices based on *reality* or the opinions of people on this forum?

Here's why I hate today's smartphones and decided to buy a 6-month-old smartphone instead:
