Blood in cat's pee. Normal, worry, or emergency? Edit: Was a bladder infection. Now with kitty pic

Our younger cat Squeaky(2 years old in November) has a rather annoying habit of peeing in the bathroom sink. A couple of weeks ago we noticed blood in his urine. We thought maybe it was a kidney stone or something. We checked his urine for a couple of days after that and saw nothing again. Then today my wife noticed he had blood in his urine again. The vet is closed until Monday or Tuesday and an emergency vet is a lot more than our normal vet.
We feed him Iams adult hairball control, the older cat has Iams senior hairball control which Squeaky eats too. They have a water dispenser so he always has water. He doesn't seem sick and he's shown no signs of pain while urinating. He seems his healthy normal hyperactive self.
Anyone ever have this happen to their cat or know what it is?
Thanks and bumps are appreciated.

Thread Title: Urine in cat's pee. Normal, worry, or emergency?

May wanna change the title, it just asks to be made fun of

I would for sure call the vet Monday, and make sure your kitty is still eating and drinking.

I'd definitely call the vet when they open this week...as to whether or not it's serious...I have no idea. Anyone else?

I've heard of people having blood in their urine from something as stupid as running on pavement, and having the impact bruise a kidney. I'd definitely get him checked out, but I wouldn't flip over it til I knew something. Hope everything's okay!

Yah I read the title, I was like "No way, there's urine in a cats pee?" Then I was wondering whether someone drank it or something, and thats why you should be worried.

You should definitely make an appointment to see the vet. That is an early indication of some type of Feline Urinary Syndrome (FUS). One of the other symptoms of the disease are improper elimination in places other than the cat pan since it is hurting the cat to pee. It begins to associate the pain with the pan and pees elsewhere in hopes that it will not hurt. In male cats it can become life threatening quickly if the uninary tract becomes completely blocked.

Thanks, The vet is open on monday so I'll give them a call and hopefully they'll be able to get him in asap. Hate to see the bill on this but I'd hate far more to see him die.

Here is what my friend says.

can mean urinary tract infection or the presence of urinary crystals. Either way get him into a vet asap.

His peeing in the sink is a warning sign for a UTI. UTI's in males are much more serious (and can be life threatening). Because of the blood, I'd get him to an emergency vet.

Get to vet soon. Could be infection (serious) or kidney disease (even more serious). Hopefully something that can be quickly treated. Good luck -- say hi to Squeaky for me

Yes, get the cat to the vet soon. One of my cats had the same thing; it was diagnosed as urinary crystals. He'd howl every time he'd use the litter box. We got special medicated food to give him every so often, and we now get the "special diet" types of catfood - they have lower magnesium than most others, which seems to be helping.

Probably UTI.... and should take the cat to the vet Monday....

I assume your vet will probably prescribe Ammoxicilin... which has a side effect of ... er loose stool...

It's definitely a UTI and is most likely being brought on by the food you are feeding him. Most traditional cat foods are nothing more than complete crap and have high amounts of ash in them which alot of male cats are sensitive to. The vet will most likely have you switch his food after this incident to something better quality like Science Diet so he won't have those problems anymore.

I feel for ya. My cat Buddy just got through a bout with urinary blockage (partial). A week on Science Diet CD-S and he's back to normal.

It's a good thing that you're taking him in while he can still pee. That means that all he probably needs is a change of diet if it's the same thing Buddy had.

Good luck to you both, and let us know what happens.

With 10 cats in our house we have run the gamut of feline diseases as you might well imagine. We have had 3 male cats and 1 female cat that have experienced urinary tract problems including 1 male that actually became blocked and had to endure a catheter. 2 of our cats are now on a permanent CD diet and we try to vary between the dried and the canned so they have some variety. It is a very common problem in cats and for a long time vets did not really know the exact causes. As you might imagine there is a ton of contradictory information out about these problems but the current consensus seems to be ash (I have actually read specifically magnesium) content in cat foods. Just do a search on feline urinary problems and you will see just how much is out there.

Have you ever heard or seen the comic Gallager? The one who smashes watermellons and other messy produce wth a sledge hammer?

My favorite quote of his is "Are your really that stupid?"

Get your cat checked out!!!! Would it be normal for you to pass blood???

Males are especially prone to UTIs.
