How do you level up? I keep playing the same level over and over and over but I can't level myself up at all. When I go to the hunters dream after farming blood bucks I don't see an option to level up. Do I need to level up before buying another weapon?
and
I know how to get them back and sometimes I do but I can't use them. Is there something I need to activate to be able to level up?

In the hunters dream, there is an angelic looking woman. You need to engage her. If she is asleep, you can put your R2 weapon away and slap her to wake her up (seriously). Then you get an option to level up using blood bucks. You also gain access to a workshop. You can upgrade your weapons there. You need blood bucks and some other thing that I can't remember the name of.

Also, upgrade your clothes at the "store". The store is the skeleton things in the fountain. You need 500 blood bucks per item but it will help you take less hit points when attacked. I guess technically, you'll take less damage with better clothes.

Ok that's how. I have some cold dew items and something else a blood stone I believe or 2 that are used for weapon upgrades. I read somewhere you need to find and defeat or be killed by a boss to wake the woman up in the hunters dream.

Didn't know smacking her will do it. Now I can actually farm the area and collect blood bux and go back to the save point to upgrade myself.

Once you upgrade stuff it auto saves right? As hard as this game is and as tedious it is I'm not sure why I enjoy it lol. Probably the strategy and challenge.

Some good fighting tips I found on another site:

The basic tutorial does not go over all the combat options so here are some advanced attacks:
-L1 after an attack will cause your weapon to transform and attack in a single motion
-bait an enemy towards you and as they approach charge up a strong attack with R2. When you get the timing down it will easily do a lot of damage and also floor most enemies, even some bigger ones depending on the weapon.
-forward on the right stick + R2 will cause you to do lunging strong attack that will likely stagger the enemy and do a lot of damage. It's great for enemies that attack when they get closer, as you can close the gap immediately before they can even begin to attack. Also works as a good follow up to landing a charged attack when the enemy is getting up.
-rolling, sprinting, and backstepping right before an attack all give different attack variations. Familiarize yourself with them as well as the standard attacks for your weapon so you can handle the situation better. For example a downward slam is great for a single enemy that's just at the edge of reach, while a horizontal swipe is good for staggering/damaging multiple enemies at once. Thrusting strikes are also very useful for tough enemies that you aren't used to.

What I also found useful is use the blunderbliss. Bullets are plentiful most of the time. As an enemy comes to their attack, L2 and then they get stunned. Right after that R1 and you will have more than half their health down .

You can hit her with an axe but it seems excessive ;-)

Ya, it's enjoyable for some reason. I think that it is all the discovery that is going on.

I do believe everything saves as it occurs. I just be sure to exit the game gracefully (through the menu) and I haven't noticed a loss of data.

From polygon.com today:
How to do Bloodborne's three best secretive moves
http://www.polygon.com/2015/3/26/82...-stab-parry-riposte-jump-attack-break-shields

THE FRONT STAB

This will look familiar to Souls players. In those games, if you hit L2 to swing your shield as an opponent was in the middle of its attack, your shield would strike his weapon, block the attack, and leave the monstrosity temporarily vulnerable. A sound would play, the bad guy would look confused, and if you hammered on R1, he'd be unable to block your powerful attack.

That's the standard parry (block) and riposte (attack) dance that sword-fighters have been doing for probably millennia. It's in Bloodborne, too, but in a different context. Just pretend your gun is your shield, and you're halfway there.

In Bloodborne, the front stab requires timing, a fair amount of health and guts. Here's what you have to do:
1.Face an enemy who's facing you.
2.Wait for them to begin attacking.
3.As they start attacking, pull L2 to fire your gun. That'll stun your enemy in a unique way.
4.If necessary, move closer to your enemy, so that you're basically touching them.
5.Hammer on R1. You'll slide into an animation (during which you'll be invincible) where you basically gut punch the bad guy, remove an enormous amount of his health and then toss him several yards in front of you.

This works wonders on the first boss! I was using this technique on accident as I didn't know it existed. And it takes down the boss' health VERY quickly. Tutorials that say to use Molotov's have it wrong. People need to use this technique. It's THE key to the first boss that you are likely to encounter. There are 2 that you could run into first but I did some serious exploring to find the second boss.

With the ps4 rest mode update you don't even need to exit the game. Just put the console in rest mode and it boots up straight to the game instantly. Works beautifully.

Yup and this works great if you lock on with R3. I like to take enemies one at a time so I'll throw a pebble and then do this procedure.

Oh, that's what those stupid pebbles are for. Makes A TON of sense now. Why did I not realize this?

I also found you have different attacks based on your positioning too. For example if you are back stepping and hit r1 you will swing differently than a normal attack. Same for side step or roll. So you basically have 8 different types of r1 and r2 attack types.

I'll give it a try. Just hit he PS4 button and go back to the home screen for the PS4 and go to sleep. Then when you turn the controller back on next it actually starts in the game? Or do you go to the game manually?

I worry about this:
Me) go to PS4 screen
Me) Go to sleep mode
Son) Press eject
Son) Put in his game
Son) Play his game
Son) quits in some unknown way (res mode, power off or nothing at all)
Me) Get PS4 to "on" state"
Me) *%%&^% TYPE WORDS
Me) Puts Bloodborne disc back in

AND ..... the Bloodborne state is??????

Time to find some weak baddies and do some tests.

Don't do it unless you have the 2.5 update. With the update you just hold the PS button, then select rest mode. Leave disk in and when you want to resume just press the PS button and the system boots up to where you left off with all apps and games you had running.

Need to double check this is selected in the settings menu though, not everyone has it on by default. Was for me though, which was neat although it never bothered me before. Not sure what the protocol is for ejecting a disk in use by a game, I'd assume it either a)disallows it or b) closes the game out.

Then you have to check settings and make sure you have the options checked off for what you want rest mode to do.

If your son removes the disk I'm not sure what happens. I know that it will resume a game or app you have had open. I assume if I remove the disk the game will close. I can try it out with another game tonite and see what happens.

So I tried smacking that doll in the hunters dream to wake it up so I can level my character and nothing happened. Just says an abandoned doll. Although I've upgraded my clothes now and the shop is open.

Doll?

It is a woman at the base of the staircase. I guess it is a doll (strange game). This is a "doll" that is the same height as your character?

So frustrations continues. Last night my friends and I got the summoning bell and boner bells and whatever bells we need. Did exactly what we are supposed to do to get into each others games and nothing. It didn't work. So a big WTF there. ANd some wasted insight.

Yea its sitting down. I went through the sewer, cleared that area and even killed the huge pig there. Got some armor upgrades but I still haven't been able to level up. Someone mentioned in the sewer there is some insight but I never found it.

Well, it's the woman in the hunters dream. She is rarely asleep and if she is asleep, you hsould be able to hit her to wake her up. If htis is not working, I am at a loss.

Oh to activate her I had to find insight by going to the first boss and dying. After that I appeared in hunters dream. Now I've opened all shortcuts and I go to the one house that's dark, kill those inside. Then I exit by the door next to the bridge, bait the netherbeasts and run back in the house.

They can't get in the house and you sit at the door so you can easily farm blood echoes like that. You get like 950 from those two. Then you can repeat by going to the hunters dream and back to the same area to level up.

Haven't tried beating the cleric beast yet. Have you changed your weapon yet? I'm thinking of trying with the saw spear and storing my cane.

I used the axe for the first boss.

Minor hint:
The mechanics are the hardest part. Not which weapon you use.
