A while ago I posted a thread about how people get any good at the call of duty games without becoming frustrated. I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible. Yeah... I know what you're all going to say. "You suck." "You have no skills." "You need more practice." Whatever...
The fact is that no matter how skilled a player, there is still just a ton of uncontrollable randomness that happens in this game that will get you slaughtered. Even though I think this is the most balanced, and most polished COD in ages it can still feel like a completely randomized mess.
It's hard to figure out exactly what it is with this game, but I think there are a number of factors.
1) Bad spawns - There are times when I spawn and an enemy is right behind me or right in front of me. They kill me before I even have a chance to get my bearings.
2) Shotguns and Bouncing Betties - Shotguns in this game are just obnoxious. They are basically one hit kill in every situation. It's not like players with shotguns are always at the top of the leaderboard, but it's just a matter of fact. They are a one hit kill 90% of the time. If an enemy gets the drop on you no matter how good a twitch killer you are you're dead; you have no chance to respond. Same goes for bouncing betties - people throw these things all over the place, and unless you have engineer or flack jacked equipped they will kill you in one hit.
3) Lag - This game is twitchy as hell, and so it's important that the netcode is up to par. Too bad this doesn't seem to be the case. Even though there are dedicated servers it doesn't seem to help. So many times I have watched a killcam where an enemy killed me when I was far around the corner out of their reach.
4) Killstreaks - The killstreaks in this game are harder to get than in previous COD games (thank god), but it still doesn't stop a good old down home raping every once and a while. One good player on the opposing team and you will have choppers, bombers, sentry guns, and dogs destroying the crap out of you repeatedly. Spawn, die, spawn, die. The endless cycle of frustration.
5) Just random crap that happens - I walk around a corner and there are 5 enemies waiting to mow me down. An enemy spawns behind me for no reason. I kill a dude and another dude kills me. I walk into a bettie or a claymore. A grenade happens to land on me. A camper kills me as I walk by their bush. Some dude with a target spotter is camping the objective. Some sniper hits me from a location so far away I can't even see it on my 27" monitor.
6) Lack of team play and communication - For the most part it seems everyone who plays this game thinks every game mode is TDM. Oh look I've captured 90% of the objective, then suddenly I'm killed. Where are my team mates?? Who the hell knows!!
I think a lot of the issues come from the fact that the maps are way too small, and the fact that the game play focuses way more on twitch shooting and pure chaos than it does tactics and objective play.
Now obviously there are some skilled players out there. I have the feeling though that there are 2 things happening that make these guys so good.
#1 - They play nothing but COD, and they play it a lot. I'm talking at least a few hours a day.
#2 - They are part of groups that play together. As a lone wolf without a guild it's impossible to coordinate in objective based game modes.
Don't get me wrong. I still think it's an OK game, and I've had quite a bit of fun with it. In fact sometimes I've really destroyed the competition and it's really gotten my adrenaline pumping. But in the long run I don't think this game has lasting appeal. There is just too much chaos and frustration for this to be a regular gaming staple for me.
