Thanks for the link to the nice guide. Sheesh, this is a lot more work than unlocking an Athlon.

thanks BigJ, guess thats the best solution for cheap and fast, since don't need t wait for the kit to come.. guess i'll go get a rear window defogger kit, kragen or autozone has it right?

Also, I can use KrazyGlue to fill gap and Razor blade instead of a Scalpel to remove the glue right?

Can anyone recommend some cheap, easily removable, gap filler and electrically conductive grease? I don't want to buy a kit and I also don't want to do anything permanent to the chip.

Which is why I've posted the request for a link on the pin-wiring unlocking method. I've seen it before, and simply put, you take a single strand of wire, loop it over two specific pins on the backside of the CPU, and viola! an unlocked XP! This will preserve your warranty, since there's no physical evidence of OC'g...

I ordered on 8/18 and just received my order. It's an AROIA 0213 Y. Now it's time to unlock it and see what it'll do.

Add me as another satisfied customer, received today(ordered Sunday) Pulled out my T-Bird and slapped in the new XP1600 (AROIA Y, 0213) set my multiplier on auto and set my FSB down to 166.

Booted right up into XP after I saved my bios settings, WCPUID shows 1736.43 MHz at 165.37 * 10.5 (left it locked). Hardware monitor shows 40 C @ 1.78 vcore Oh my! You gotta love that for $60. Time to run her through the paces...so far...me likeee.

just got mine today also... didn't want to mess with the multi, so left it locked... was able to get it to go to 166 stable on default voltage... bumped up to 170fsb and it didn't.. so up voltage to 1.8 and now it's stable.... tried 175 fsb.. but had a window protection error... prolly mem can't handle it.... (kingston pc2100 ram)

Forgot to mention its a AGOIA core....

the pinwire unlocking procedure u weretalking about..... but with foil.. I might do this instead, since it doesn't void the warranty, got it from overclockers.com

Materials needed:

razor blade
scissors
clear tape, preferably 3M Scotch tape as the adhesive on this brand doesn't become gooey over time
aluminum foil
pin or sewing needle
pencil, 0.5 mm mechanical preferred
1 piece of white paper

1.Start off with a piece of foil 3 cm by 2 cm.

2.On the white paper, use the razor to cut off a piece of foil that is 1 mm in width. This will give you a piece of foil 1 mm by 2 cm.

3.Cut the 1 mm by 2 cm piece of foil into 4 pieces. each 2 mm in length. They are small, so do this over the white paper so that they stand out.

4.Tear off a piece of Scotch tape 3 cm in length.

5.Fold the shorter edge of the tape on itself, so it makes a little pull tab. This will make it easier to pull it off if you need to without having the tape tearing in odd places.

6.Cut the off the scalloped edge of the tape from when it was torn off from the tape dispenser. This will prevent the tape for tearing in odd places if you have to take the tape off.

7.Put the tape across the Athlon chip. Make certain it is over the L1 traces. It doesn't matter if it goes across the other traces. Make certain it doesn't go near the chip core however, as it does get too hot there and may melt the tape.

8.Once the tape is over the L1 traces, lightly go over the L1 traces with the pencil. This will copy their position onto the tape.

9.Pull the tape off. You will now see that you have their exact position, and now know where to put the small pieces of foil that you cut earlier.

10.Put the tape on the paper so that the sticky side is facing up. You can stick the tape to the razor blade so it will stay down without lifting up or being an annoyance. This will make it easier to apply the small pieces of foil.

11.Use the pin to pick up one piece of the 1 mm by 2 mm foil. It should stay right to the head of the pin. If you have problems getting the foil to the pin, just use a stack of paper, as you will then be able to "stick" the foil.

12.Using a steady hand (like a shaky hand would work anyway?) place the piece of foil on the sticky side of the tape, right where you see your pencil marks.

13.Repeat that 3 more times, and you will be good to go.

14.Line up the pieces of foil over the traces and once applied, I used the eraser end to lightly press the foil over the traces to make certain it made contact and closed the traces.

15.Reapply heatsink, change multiplier, and you should be in business.

Just got mine yesterday, AROIA core, running locked at 10.5x166 = 1743mhz at default, I will have to unlock my processor later since my pc2100 ram is maxed out i think.

tried the taped foil.. then taped wire.... no go 4 me...... no i wonder after I trace the L1 bridges on the tape..... then use a conductive pen to write on the traces (on the sticky side of course) then tape it back on.... will it be enough to unlock it?

ok, call me an idiot, but i've finally decided to upgrade my aging PII-400 rig. i plan to do it piece by piece, starting with MB/CPU/RAM. this is offtopic, but i figured people here would know the answer since there have been posts talking about OCing the 1600 on this thread. i plan to order the 1600+ from Newegg, pick up a MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU DDR from fry's, if they're still available, an AX-7 from SVC, and maybe a stick or two of samsung DDR (probably pc2700). my main problem is that i want to use my old case for now as i can't afford the new case i want. the old case is an antec midtower that has an antec 250w ps... it has minimal space, not much cooling. it does have a prebuild rack for a front fan, but looking at the slots built-in, it may not do much to cool. i want to OC this 1600 up to 1.7-1.8Ghz eventually, but at least run the 1600+ at regular speed and locked, stable. will this case/ps handle it? or will i have to wait for my new case? thanks.

edit: in case it matters what components are inside (i have no AGP, btw), i have 192MB SDRAM (PC100, i believe), two ethernet cards, a graphic card (riva tnt 16mb), a sound card (SBLive! Value), a dial up modem (unused), a 10GB hard drive, 40GB hard drive, a DVD-ROM drive, and a external CD burner. so yes, i'm pushing the ps hard enough already. you think it can handle a new mobo, ddr333 and 1600+?

Well from personal experience, I put in a AXP 1700+ with epox 8kha+ into a case with a 220 watt PSU and it has been working fine for over a week now... I guess if yours don't handle it too well, you could always buy another cheap 40 or 50 dollar case with a 300-350 watt PSU already in there.

Re: XP cpus on Iwill KK-266R mobos. There are two distinct versions of KK266R, ver 1.0 and 2.0. I own both; as I recall, ver 1 has an AMI controller and ver 2 has a Promise controller. The Iwill site doesn't differentiate, from what I could tell.

Anyway, various forums have posts indicating mixed results, but I usually don't know which KK266R people are talking about.

Ordered on Monday and got the AROIA Y 0213 today. Awesome deal. Thanks!

Can't wait to stick it into my MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU that I got from Fry's last weekend for $79.99. Together with my $30 AR PNY Samsung TCB0 which I'm confident will go to 166FSB with no problem at all, this rig which cost me $79.99 + $55 + $30 = $165 total is going to kick @ss.

well it may work but chances are that you'll run into some ramdom restarts when pushing the p.s..ck you're 5 volt rail amps.if your up around 20 amps you may be ok.i believe amd likes atleast 24 amps on the 5v rail but you can ck thier site to see.they have a list of recomended ps's.as far as most your other drives and future fans they draw off the 12v rail so you should be ok there.
as far as cooling you going to want to get acouple case fans in your case.try to keep a even number of intake and exaust fans.and if your getting a oem processor your going to have to get a heatsink also.theres many hs reviews around so do alittle investigation.its going to come down to how much money you want to spend and how much noise you can put up with.

oh by the way. welcome to the forums....

Ordered a XP 1600 and the refurb ECS K7S5A on Monday and got it Friday. Total was $89.99.

The Athlon XP is an AROIA and the refurb board looks like it is brand new (MB still sealed in bag, manual, CD, cables, back plate and box all included).

I don't think I'll do the unlocking modification right now (coming from a Celeron 500 to this is enough speed for the moment...). What speed can I expect without the unlocking and using a 80mm HSF? (I also will be using 168pin Micron SDRAM rather than DDR).
