I've got a very tough choice to make...

Refurbished XP1600+ @ newegg for $94
Brand New XP1600+ @ newegg for $51.99

Hmmm, what to do

idioteque, If your close to a Fry's, this weeks ad shows they have a Soyo mid tower ATX case with an "AMD Athlon XP approved 300 watt power supply" for only $29.99. Thought it might be of some help. Probably not the best, but for $30......... Looks pretty decent for the price??

I don't know much about OCing, and I think I just made a huge mistake. I picked up the GA-7VRXP and I have it right here in my hands, with the 1600+ supposedly arriving soon. I've been reading stories about people not being able to OC the AGOIA even past 150fsb. Is this true? I still have time to return this motherboard if I have to. Thanks for the info. BTW, I have revision 2.0.

Newegg seems to be carrying the AGOGA steppings of the 1900+. At $103, it's not that great of a deal, but just thought I should mention it. Anyone know how this chip compares to the 1600+?

Spidey I could be making this up but I think that XP is capable of being accellerated by SSE but the accelleration will only be enabled if XP detects SSE upon install. If you want XP to be accellerated then you need to reinstall XP. Otherwise SSE will only accellerate applications running in XP and not XP itself.
I'm not denying it, in fact I could very well be wrong. If I am, some of my programs have been fooled because they let me select the SSE box where before I remember it being greyed out. However, out of curiosity, I ran dxdiag and got the following line on my processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP1600+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1396MHz

I'm assuming SSE would be listed there if it was available? I'm planning a reinstall of WinXP from scratch in the coming week (right now it's at triple boot - Win98, Win2k, WinXP - time for a cleanup, no?) at which point, if you're correct which seems to be the case, I'll see SSE pop up in the Diagnostic Tool window, among other things.
I've been reading stories about people not being able to OC the AGOIA even past 150fsb.
I got the AGOIA core and it's been sitting at 166 on the FSB just fine whenever I overclock for some video encoding to be done. I think you should be fine - it's other components (memory, your mobo) that should really be limiting factor in that case.

Oops, let me rephrase what I said... I meant that I've read stories about people not being able to OC the AGOIA core past 150fsb on the GA-7VRXP. I'm pretty sure you could even hit 200fsb on some mobos. Anyway, anyone have any suggestions on what I should replace this Gigabyte with? I need something under $110 (shipped), KT333, with overheat (shutdown) protection. RAID and LAN onboard is a plus, but USB 2.0 is needed. 5 PCI at the least. A mobo with stellar performance when I OC this thing would be better to me than features. Thanks!

That's one nice MB... looks like it might even hit past 2200+ performance with a bit of good RAM and a watercooled system. I'll consider it. A balance of performance is good though... the computer will be aircooled the whole time, I have no plans on watercooling. Any other suggestions on what motherboard I should get? The five main goals are: Good performance, under $120, USB 2.0, Overheat Detection and Shutdown (I'm new to this, last thing I need is a fried AGOIA), and KT333. Please reply with suggestions, I'm going to return my motherboard tomorrow at Fry's and picking up a new one there ( store credit sucks. :frown: ).

Edit: Back from Fry's. Picked up the Albatron KX400+ Pro since NONE (I had a list of five motherboards) of the ones I wanted were in stock, and I figured that the Albatron easily fit my budget at around $80. Anyone use this board before? How is it?

Ordered 1600+ on Sat morning from Newegg and I am now at step 2.
When it arrives I will be putting it in an Abit KR7A133R in my new Antec SX830.

I just finished reading all of the above posts and wanted to thank everyone for all the info, especially on unlocking.

I hope it arrives here in FL by Wednesday. Newegg has always been quick on shipping.

Just checked Newegg site, AMD Athlon 1600+/266 FSB XP is in stock w/Special Free FedEx Saver Shipping

I wish I knew what was wrong with my computer, restarting like that and all... someone answered in my thread and stated that it might be a dying CPU. Anyone know off the top of their head what CPU the Asus A7V accepts? Going to go look for that info on Asus site right now...

ASUS
Socket A for AMD® Athlon? / Duron? 550MHz ~ 1.3GHz+ CPU... so no good?

I got a friggin AGOIA 0212 with second line starting with "9"... so it's an AGOIA "9"? Haven't installed it yet since I'm waiting to get other parts for the system. Can't find much info about how OC-able this stepping is... Any of you happen to know? Thanks...

same core as i got.
so far i cant get the 14 and 15 multi's on my mb to work and something is holding me from getting above a 144 buss(using lower multi).
so as of now my chip will run 1800 at default ,looping with cpu stressing program.

Im so tight on money its not even funny and I need to replace my motherboard, but so as a general rule newegg is just selling AGOIA cores? My last one that I got from them was AGOIA (2100+ too :Q) but it was put to waste with my pos gigashit GA-7VRXP 2.0 board. The one before that wasnt, so is everybody here anyway getting AGOIA Y stepped chips?

heh. heh. uhh. good luck dude. I hope yours works better than both of mine Soon mine should be being replaced by a 8K5A3+. Its just so hard to get a new board just snap, like that...Mine over heated my cpu's, even my friends, put on the same way with the same as3 and all that. It liked to read high temperatures and eventually took out my 2100.

Beware the RMA stories of epox boards in the amdmb.com forum. sounds painfull. People make jokes like "who hasn't had to rma one of these?" haHAhgahahaHA. ugh. I'm sure some are fine too. no need to prove me wrong. there is always "that 2%".
