Blown Out Speakers?

Hi guys-

I have a pair of old speakers, the AR28BX speakers. They are fairly old I think and I can't find info about them online. This is a picture.

I suspect that they are blown out. I'm not sure exactly what blown out sounds like, but the bass is almost bubbly. It sounds like instead of making the noise it should make there is almost a rattle-like sound to the beat of the bass. It is hard to explain. Does anyone know what this issue is?

BTW- I am a COMPLETE audio noob. I'm not sure if this is the correct terminology, but when I take off the screen and look at the speakers, on both of them the cone?? (circle with a bubble in middle and it is make out of foamy stuff) is like completely eroded/crappy looking. So I'm not sure if that is the problem, or the speakers are blown out, or both. I think the cone's are the problem because if I hold one to muffle it while audio is playing, the crappy sound goes away.

Anyway I'm wondering what to do to fix these speakers. Do I have to bring them into an audio shop and pay a premium? Is there a fix I can do on my own that isn't extremely difficult that simply requires I buy some replacement parts?

Edit: My problem might be similar to this guy's but I have no clue what surrounds are or how to remove the big 8" circle from the speaker housing itself, etc.

So clearly the styrofoam stuff is messed. But is that the source of the annoying crap sound? Or is there more to my problem?
