Blu ray audio static (with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1?)

I'm trying to play the King's Speech using PowerDVD 7.3 (came with the LG drive, a GGC-H20L v1.03). I ran Cyberlink's BR compatibility checker in case it was a copy protection thing but it came up all passes.

Audio in the trailers and the menu is fine. Soon as the movie starts there's just nasty screeching static noise. There's none of the actual movie soundtrack.

I tried playing I Am Legend BR, which plays perfectly. edit: Tried Inception, found same problem.

The only thing I can think of is the codec - King's Speech and Inception use DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 while I Am Legend uses Dolby TrueHD 5.1. When I load PowerDVD the background shows logos for, amongst other things, Blu-ray Disc, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

I've just upgraded this PC's CPU, RAM and motherboard - using a Realtek chip for which the latest driver is installed - so it's possible I've gone wrong somewhere.

This is a rental disk so no chance of a pirate copy, but no I'd never tried it on the previous build [Inception did play fine before]. No other BR player to try it on.

Any ideas? Preferably ones that don't involve shelling out the hilarious amount of money Cyberlink try to charge for the full version of the software (I could buy another drive bundled with the Express version for that!).

Single 3.5mm to the front speaker out (green) socket at the back of the motherboard.

Hmm... can't really suggest much then. Make sure in the audio settings PowerDVD is configured to for two speaker stereo and not SPDIF output. Sounds like it might be a bug in PowerDVD though.

Something's interfering I think.

I decided to try shutting everything down and at one point the audio worked! ASUS AI Suite seemed to be the culprit so I uninstalled it... But then still have the problem.

And now I've fiddled about doing nothing really and this time it's OK again.

I guess at least there's sign that there's some clues about...

Alas, nope.

It's only OK with additional narration (e.g. director or for impaired sight). I'm not sure if this is a second stream of audio on top of the regular, or if there is a separate audio stream with both the usual sound and the narration.

Tried the Arcsoft TotalMedia trial and that worked fine. Might try reinstalling PowerDVD and mucking about with all the patches.

I really wish however I could just buy some codec for windows media player or MPC-HC.

You can if you crack the copy protection. AnyDVD-HD or DVDFab HD Decrypter if prefer free though you'll have to rip the disk first which can take a while. You can play the movie straight from MPC-HC. You'll lose DTS-HD decoding though sounds like your using stereo PC speakers so you won't notice. Install ffdshow if you want TrueHD decoding.

Well the DVDFab route worked.

Not sure I want to have to decrypt each movie for an hour before watching though, and that's the quick way. Visual quality dropped quite a bit too.

But at least it's a temporary solution, so thanks!

AnyDVD-HD can crack the encryption without ripping but its not free (21day trial). You also have to find the right playlist file to open (eac3to is simple to use if you know how to use a command line).
