I'm still waiting for the ~$200 mark.

Rediculous that you can get a HD-DVD player for a third of that pretty easily.

Yeah, but compare apples to apples. If you want 1080p over HDMI HD-DVD player you need a Toshiba A35 player...

I got an LG Super Multi that does blue ray and hd for $287 that included shipping from Canada, insurance, and a $99 copy of PowerDVD Ultra. Don't mean to thread crap but it seemed like a pretty good deal from NCIX.com, Canada.

And that's not a standalone player with HDMI outputs.

From what I've read there is no difference between 1080i and 1080p when the media source is 1080i on the HD-DVD. So apples to apples you're overpaying for a feature that yields no benefit if you go with a 1080p HD-DVD player.

But ya CC does have the same player for $299, with a 10% coupon (AAA also has a 10% off coupon) its cheaper after tax than Amazon and you can pick it up at a B&M. Not sure how that entertainment.com rebate works, I guess its external to CC's site because they only allow you to apply 1 coupon per online purchase.

This is a profile 1.0 player isnt it? Its allready outdated. It wont do the advanced interactive features being released on BR. Also, many profile 1.0 players need constant firmware upgrades to play newer movies. Since profile 1.0 players are no longer being produced, this (and other profile 1.0 players) may not be supported with firmware updates in the future to play new disks. Also, profile 1.0 players (with maybe the exception of the ps3) cannot be upgraded to profile 1.1 or 2.0 because of hardware limitations. Guess thats what happens when you release a product with incomplete specs to the market.

Yeah, this is the player that's been having problems with the latest releases. There is now a firmware update that allows it to play the Die Hard movies and a few others that didn't work before, but who knows how long they will continue to release firmware updates for it.

PS3 to get BRD 1.1

Don Eklund, EVP of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, promised an update for the PS3, which is the most popular Blu-ray player by far, that will allow the player to support BD Profile 1.1 starting later this month.

This is a profile 1.0 player isnt it? Its already outdated
Yes, but it will still play 1.1 movies.

So what's the big difference between Profile 1.0 and Profile 1.1? There are several different hardware requirements (see the chart below), but it basically boils down to picture-in-picture functionality.

Profile 1.1 players certainly don't make older Profile 1.0 players obsolete. While movie enthusiasts lust over special features and commentary tracks, many people are completely uninterested in investing even more time in a movie. If you already have a Profile 1.0 player, it should be able to play all the new Profile 1.1 discs without a problem--you just won't be access to some of the special features.[/b]

Just a warning...

The Samsung BD-P1400 has a lot of glitches and other playback issues with some titles. I've used most of the available players and the only two I would recommend are the PS3 and Panasonic BD30.

If the entire United States had a universal sales tax that applied to everyone, then an after tax price would be relevant.

If you want to be totally fair... You need an *A30* player not A35... Bit of a price dif between the two. And frankely there's a good case to be made for profile 1.1 support over 1080P
