Blu-ray ROM drive problem

Guys,

I've got a Sony BDU-X10S drive installed in my Win7 Home machine and recently had issues with it recognizing DVDs. It simply doesn't know they're there when I put it in. The light flashes some, the drive spins and clicks like it's trying to recognize it, but then gives up. This happens to commercial and burned DVDs, movie discs and data discs.

Funny thing is that it recognizes Blu-ray discs and CDs. It's just the DVDs that fail. Do DVD's use a separate laser that may have failed?

I've tried blowing it out with canned air with no effect. I'm not afraid to open it up to manually clean it up if that's what it takes, but wanted to see if there are other steps I should try first.

DVD's are regional eg. PAL and BR and CD's are not.
I have the same problem with a BR player a friend gave for this same reason.
Mine is extremely picky that if it thinks its PAL or if it doesnt detect NTS and still is it ejects them.

You may be able to find a firmware update for your BR player that fixes this, Im out of luck as there isnt one for mine, But I cant bitch about a free BR player.

Since you say it doesn't work with DVD data discs, I don't think its a region code problem. I think a drive locked to an incorrect region should still be able to read data. Its possible it has a separate laser for DVD and bluray(some Playstation 3's have separate lenses for DVD/Bluray)

If it does have 2 lenses, I am not not sure which one would be reading the CD's?

Yeah, it's really weird. It happens on data discs too, so I don't think it's a region thing. I still can't get it to work. Looks like I'm going to have to open her up and see if I can do anything.
