hd-dvd because i think they are doing better stuff in terms of "unsaid requirements" with their movies (all of them are vc1/mpeg 4) and are dual layer (sans the few combo experiments)

While I don't particularly care much for one format or another, I think Blu-Ray will come out on top. Simply because the porn industry supports it, and as history has taught us anything (VHS vs. Betamax), whichever format the porn industry supports, that format will win.

It's not like answering this poll is going to cost you money, so what is holding you back?

HD-DVD. It's much cheaper and it's not another crappy sony proprietary format. They are still having huge problems mass producing blu-ray players so don't expect the price of blu-ray to go down anytime soon. Plus at the moment HD-DVD looks better than blu-ray. Also HD-DVD has less DRM crap.

Oh, and YOU'RE NOT GIVING MONEY TO SONY!

Blu-ray because a PS3 is just as cheap as HD capable Xbox360 (cheaper if you want wifi -- $88 for a MS adapter!?) and with xbox360 you need 2 devices + 2 power bricks + link cable. Plus a separate Xbox 1 if you want backwards compatibility.

If you want high def, the PS3 is sleeker and cleaner.

You can get an HD-DVD player from amazon for $375. $300 on ebay.

But you can't play games on it

I only have so much room in my AV stand, so a console makes more sense than just a player, and the Sony is a better high-def console than the Xbox collection of parts IMHO.

Anyone know how many Xbox HD-DVDs have been sold? More than the 200,000 or so PS3s?

I support neither format, though leaning towards hd-dvd. But really, I'm not buying anything until there is only one choice. I jumped on the dvd bandwagon pretty early, and actually my original Pioneer dvd player still works as good as the day I bought it over 8 years ago. But this nex-gen hd format war crap is just bs where everyone loses.

Why can't Sony & Toshiba just flip a coin and share the royaltee fees 50/50?

Which console is better will have very little to do with what format is better.

True, but it's still a reason for preferring BR

The potential of both formats is roughly equal, neither is better, both are proprietary, both camps are equally "evil" even though it's more trendy to bash Sony this year.

Blu-ray has the edge in upcoming titles and in player sales once the PS3 is shipping in more volume, unless a huge fraction of Xbox360 owners go for the HD-DVD drive.

If Sony has taught me anything from the PS2, it's that gaming consoles are sh*t movie players. Why should I expect the PS3 to be any different?

The PS2 usually couldn't read the second layer of dvds, couldn't display subtitles on many dvds, and some movies the picture quality was very grainy and washed out compared to the output from a stand-alone dvd player.

Let alone the quality of consoles in general. The first PS2 I had eventually had the infamous disc read error, so it had to be replaced. Look at all the overheating xbox 360's. We'll shortly find out what's wrong with the PS3, having to send many back for repair. All while my stand-alone Pioneer dvd player from 1998 still performs like a champ.
