I didnt say anything about belgian whites being chicky, I meant blue moon specifically. its overly sweet and has fruit tones to it, which IMO makes it chicky. Maybe its not the corriander that I am disliking,it could be the clove that it supposedly in it

its no berry weiss though which is a total chick beer

and uh...if you go to a REAL 'bistro' with a true chef, he would likely care that you put ketchup on his whatever it is your ordered, because if it was supposed to have it he would have put it on there for you

I sample alot of the 'micro macros' because well, they are generally well priced and some are pretty decent.

Michelob makes alot of decent beers even though its AB

I'd argue about a berry weiss, or anything that you want to classify as a chick beer. I'll counter with a lambic or mead (which I hate, too sweet for my taste) since they're distinct, especially a lambic. FYI, Michelob is going to be closed, so you'll lose the micro macro factor of it. I tend to stick to Sam Adams or Sierra Nevada, and I'm not saying Blue Moon is terrible - it's an OK beer, I just prefer not to support true macro breweries.

As for the chef comments, no, I've never met a bistro chef, but I know a few other chefs and none of them are dicks. Anyone who feels the need to dictate what someone consumes if they're paying for it can go jump off a fuckin bridge.

NO SOUP FOR YOU!

The guy I knew wasn't some bistro chef, he was a downtown Chicago executive steakhouse chef.

A true chef is an asshole, they all are. But they also create magical food. If you think that you're smarter than a chef, then you're probably not going to enjoy a lot of complex foods.

I was talking about leine's berry wise

its fruit punch in a bottle with some beer added. worse than shandy's

I've had and enjoyed some lambic's, they were much more complex than the berry weiss I am referring to

Sam has stepped it up lately, and started making good beers again

I enjoy Sierra Nevada, the local pizza place by me has it on tap

I went to a place that served burgers without mustard. I asked for mustard and was told "The chef doesn't believe in mustard on his burgers, he uses his own special djon sauce".

I told the waitress to inform the chef I would not be eating there.

I got my mustard.

your so badass

It's a chic beer. They like it so they push it. Everybody really does know this. It's like cider beers, a chic beer for chics that don't like the taste of beer.

Chick? Or stylish?

Either way, I love ATOT beer threads.

The same can be said for beer, wine, liquor, cars, etc.

There's a difference between being smart and an asshole. Just because you're good at something, doesn't give you the right to dictate how some enjoys or consumes your food. No matter how good you are at what you do, you HAVE to be able to take criticism to continue being good at what you do.

No, the point is that if a good chef wants your business, he will make food you want to eat. The crap he put in that cup next to my burger was awful, I wasn't going to eat it. Plain old mustard is a must on a burger.

A good chef knows their market. Hell even Gordon Ramsey has made comments on this. If your food is too high brow or too low brow for your market, you are going out of business.

If you're not putting an orange slice in it, you're doing it wrong.

Pure marketing...

Keith Villa of Molson Coors came up with the idea to merchandise Blue Moon — a Belgian-style wheat beer — as the one beer to have with a slice of orange. That worked. “When people saw a beer with an orange slice on it, it piqued their interest,” says Jim Doney of Chicago Beverage Systems. Once that idea caught on in bars, Monarch Beverages carried it through in stores: “Wherever there’s an orange, there ought to be a stack of Blue Moon,” says Jim Zerons of Monarch Beverages. That worked, too.

Jesus christ, that's that fucking point. If you go to fucking Ruth Chris steakhouse downtown and pay $70 for a steak, and want ketchup on it... then they DONT want your business, because the market IS high brow and you are not. If you go to applebees and want ketchup on your well done ribeye, then ketchup you will get.

You will actually get a side of ketchup at the best places, but the chef will 100% not approve.

You have to be a real snob to hate on Blue Moon. It's one thing to say YOU don't like it, but it's a reasonably good beer at a reasonable price.

Not really. It's a reasonably mediocre Belgian-style wit at a premium price. If bars priced it for what it is, then yes, it'd be a good buy. Most bars group it with good craft breweries, so I can get other beers for the same price.

Funny I mention that, as the new Flying Saucer in Sugarland, TX actually doesn't carry Blue Moon - hell, they do not carry any macro brews.

There are a bunch of bars in chicago that carry no or very limited macro brews, it's so fucking nice.

And when clueless customers come in, their staff actually knows what to recommend because they are generally beer lovers.

Unfortunately the bar that I work for is all macros (if you include goose island).

I mean at a bar, where it is $4.50-$5 while other domestics are $3-$3.50. When I say premium, I generally mean domestic, import and premium. I almost slapped a bartender when they told me Shiner and Sam Adams are considered import/premium - I asked her how a town 80 miles away could be considered an import. :hmm:

I've also spent ridiculous sums on beer, ranging from $18 for a 6 pack to $20 for a 4 pack and even higher to stuff like Infinium. I probably beat my typical cost/oz with the Rogue Scotch Ale which is an 8oz for $12. Freaking beer ...

Funny you should say that. My wife and I go to Ruth Chris once a year and order ketchup sides with her steaks, because she likes it that way. They never complain.....So they must want our business....

I live in Indiana, less than an hour drive from 3 floyds. The last time I ordered one of their imperial IPAs I didn't think to check the price. It was $12.00 for a 12oz glass. That was the last time I ordered 3 floyds at a bar. I drive 5 minutes from my house and by 6 packs for $8.99. Beer prices for micro brews at bars/restaurants need to come in check with local prices.

Also 3 floyds makes some damn good beer.

its all over in my area

the ncie thing about it was it was the same price alot of the time as say....a miller lite

and its a superior beer

and scrubass friends who only like watered down macro swill wont be stealing from your pitcher

Leine's was superior AND cheaper till Leine's went all 'we arent shipping much outside of WI anymore and its going to cost more'. around the time they 'sold out' to Miller

killians was alot like mich amber bock , a decent beer at a great price point.

Re: Fruit in the beer.

We put fruit (mangos, apples, peaches, act) over things like chicken, fish and pork. We put fruit in salads. We put fruit in cookies. We put fruit on pancakes and waffles. Fruit just compliments or enhances existing flavors. (or lack there of)

And guess what...some beer is actually brewed with things like lemon or orange zest. Blue moon in particular has *some* kind of orange flavor so adding an orange slice just further enhances that already present flavor.

Same thing with many other various types of wheat that have yeasts, hops, or spices that favor a more tangy citrus flavor like a lemon.

The real women are the ones making fun of fruit in the beer.

If it tastes good, then it tastes good. Fuck off.

This post makes me want to buy you a Sebago Lakes Heffe. Well said. Amazing the small things one can overlook when too much is placed on tradition. Oranges? ORANGES?!?!?!

1. People hate domestic brews as a massive trend

2. Concoct an all-new 100% American brew from the very labs of Coors

3. Mention NOTHING about Coors, market it as a 'Belgian White' (now sued and called Belgian-style), even set up its own website and say it's from Blue Moon Brewing Company.

4. 99% of mass market thinks it's a hip Belgian brew and now enjoys mainstream success

The difference is that Blue Moon is actually a good beer.

Huh, that's a surprise to me. I'm with Bober actually, Blue Moon doesn't taste as good to me now as it did back say 10yrs ago. It might be me, or it might be the difference in popularity, or the difference between having it on draft in Florida and having it in a bottle in NE. Who knows.
