blue ray or HD DVD

Recently saw bunch articles one this. Seems blueray has the capacity advantage: 25GB/size to 15GB for HDDVD. To me HD DVD seems closer to DVD than blueray. So HD DVD is more of evolutionary product. Considering how US market reacts to things like VHS etc. I think most people here are more evolutionary than revolutionary when comes to electronics, we don't go buy the greatest/latest so I think HD DVD will prevail eventually due to its lower cost will be more to US cusumer's taste.

The cost difference really favors HDDVD at this point. A lot depends on media cost - and also, how much capacity is really needed by the mass market?

The US market has traditionally been cost driven more than technology. Remember Betamax!

I think Blu-ray will ultimately prevail, Sony is working very hard to push it. They have it coming out for the PS3, either that or we may end up having two formats in pretty much a stalemate.

Yeah, a $599 PS3. I don't think that's going to help it very much.

From what I've seen thus far, the cost difference of the actual movies is negligible between the two formats, thus the only people benefitting from lower cost right now is the companies producing the discs. Once the Blu-Ray side gets fully up and running, they should be able to compete with HD-DVD on this as well. Not only that, but right now, they're willing to eat into their profits to be competitive in price.

I recall people using cost as a big argument for HD-DVD, but I think the people didn't realize that that lower cost was pretty much only going to benefit the companies and would not really be passed onto the consumer, especially considering that if Blu-Ray wants to be competitive it will have to match their price.

you're talking about the cost of the discs. but currently, the players are 2x as expensive for BR. the prices will come down, but they will come down for hddvd discs and players too.

anyway, no way to tell right now, despite what you may hear from advocates of either side. if you have the money and must have it now, buy whichever has more of the movies you like, or buy both, knowing what you bought may become a relic.

I think blue ray will almost have to prevail mostly because of the big market vendors. Sony backs it and several companies in the movie industry have announced that they will be releasing some of their movies on blue-ray. I don't think cost is an issue, CD-ROM drives cost several hundred bucks back when they were first released. I think its pretty much up to the big companies. Its not like the US public is going to stop buying movies just because their in one format or another.
