I just racked up enough old parts to build a computer in my room.

It consists of:
k-6 2 450mhz (brand: I think it is Epox)
6 gig hard drive
mouse
keyboard
mid-tower case
1 stick of 64 meg ram
win98se
Geforce 2 32 megs....

that's it, no Cd-drive or Floppy drive yet because the computer is not working..

The computer will boot normally, but in about 5 minutes, it will ALWAYS give me the blue screen.......

what is teh problem here??? It can't be heat becuase I don't have a lot in there, and the case is still open...what do you guys think? some people say that it could be the ram, but I dont know....should I buy a new stick and see what happens??

it could be any one of these things-

1.)Bad Ram
2.)Heat
3.)Sound Card if it's a VxD Error
4.)Video Card Overheating and or Driver error

If a re-install dosn't work it has to be one of those things. Make sure you using 12.31 dets.

It could very likely be that the video card is drawing too much power for your AGP slot (that happened to me: my TNT2 AGP card drew too much power from the AGP slot of my Gigabyte GA-5AA board, and caused constant BSODs). The first thing I think that you should try, if you have a PCI video card available, is to try that instead of the AGP one to see if it helps the BSODs to go away.

hmmm......

I checked, and all the fans are running fine....so heat cannot be the problem....

I checked the blue screen error, and it IS some kind of a vxd error.....but When you said soundcard, did you mean video card? because I don't have a sound card installed(it is onboard sound)...

also, my gforce is a pci card to begin w/, so it can't be an agp problem....

keep the replies coming guys....

I just noticed that you have no CDROM drive in this system. Does this mean that the OS on the hard drive was installed on another computer and then you transferred it to this one? If so, it might be that a simple reinstall is needed.
Otherwise, please record the name of the VXD...maybe that will help us to determine the error.

actually, I did install win98 w/ a CD-rom. It's just that I took the drive out because my other computer needs it..

but here is what it says on teh blue screen

A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C005338 in VXD vmm(01)+ 00004338. The current application will be terminated

then, when I "press any key to continue," I get an illegal operation box......I push ok, and the same blue screen appears.....I hope taht helps...

I still think you should check the installation of the heatsink/fan on the CPU chip to make sure you have a good fit and the proper amount of heatsink paste. I had a similar problem several years ago that had a time from boot to BSOD that paralleled your experience that turned out to be a weak and bent heatsink clip.

ok, thanx...I guess I"ll check it...just to make sure....

but the thing is that, this is an old motherboard...It's worked fine 5 years ago, so I dont' think the clip would just bend by itself....but I"ll check anyways....

so..........

bump.

It could very likely be a sound driver issue, even if it is onboard. After the 5 minutes or so, nomatter what application or state the pc is
in, it will always bluescreen? Or is it just a certain application, etc? And is the bluescreen always the same error, with slight
differences in the mem address? Does it bluescreen in safemode? I would go after video/sound drivers or the ram.
