Hello. I have an Inspiron 8500 notebook and it suddenly decided to stop booting on me. When i start the computer i reach the Windows loading screen and then receive a hideous blue screen entitled "Bad_Pool_Caller". It tells me to check my drivers, memory, blah blah blah....
I ran a Microsoft memory diagnonstic test by disk booting and all of the components passed. I tried to repair my installation of Windows, but received the blue screen agian. My biggest worry is that I cannot even reformat. When i try to reformat using Windows XP, i recieve the blue screen again. I have never seen anything like this before. Does anybody have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

ps. could it be the HD?

thanks...it's
STOP: 0x000000C2 0x00000043 0xC8841000 0x00000000 0x00000000

next time it was
0x000000C2 0x00000043 0xC8881000 0x00000000 0x00000000

the third time it was
0x000000C2 0x00000043 0xC88c1000 0x00000000 0x00000000

the third word seems to be incrementing it's fifth hex value by 4 each time....any ideas?

I suppose the 0x43 part of the stop string refers to: attempt to free a virtual address that was never in any pool. That didn't help much

Have you tried to install drivers, or a system service recently, or upgraded something like firmware?

Can you start it in safe mode?

I have not updated either firmware or drivers. Safe mode crashes the same way. I did notice my computer starting to act fickle after I installed Kazaa lite. It had some XP Look feature (to make it look xp style)...i don't know if that would act like a driver or not. I appreciate everybody's help.

Operating system does not start (the logon screen does not appear)

Feature: Last Known Good
When to use it: When you suspect that a change you made to your computer
before restarting might be causing the failure.
What it does: Restores the registry settings and drivers that were in
effect the last time the computer started successfully.
Available on: Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional.
For more information, see To start the computer using the last known good
configuration.

Feature: Safe Mode and System Restore
When to use it: If you used Last Known Good and your system is still not
working.
What it does: Starts using only basic files and drivers (mouse, except
serial mice; monitor; keyboard; mass storage; base video; default system
services; and no network connections). If you are able to start the system
in Safe Mode, you can then use System Restore to restore all system and
application settings back to those that were in effect at at a time when
your system was working optimally.
Available on: Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional.
For more information, see System Restore overview or Start the computer in
safe mode.

Feature: Recovery Console
When to use it: If using Last Known Good is unsuccessful, and you cannot
start the computer in Safe Mode. This method is recommended only if you are
an advanced user who can use basic commands to identify and locate problem
drivers and files. To use the Recovery Console, restart the computer with
the installation CD for the operating system in the CD drive. When prompted
during text-mode setup, press R to start the Recovery Console.
What it does: From the Recovery Console, you can access the drives on your
computer. You can then make any of the following changes so that you can
start your computer:
a.. Enable or disable device drivers or services.
b.. Copy files from the installation CD for the operating system, or
copy files from other removable media. For example, you can copy an
essential file that had been deleted.
c.. Create a new boot sector and new master boot record (MBR). You might
need to do this if there are problems starting from the existing boot
sector.
Available on: All versions of Windows XP.
For more information, see Recovery Console overview.

Feature: Automated System Recovery
When to use it: After all other attempts at recovery fail, or if you have
replaced a damaged system hard drive. You must have previously used Backup
to create an Automated System Recovery set.
What it does: Automated System Recovery restores all disk signatures,
volumes, and partitions on the disks required to start the computer.
Automated System Recovery then installs a simplified installation of Windows
and automatically starts a restoration using the backup created by the
Automated System Recovery wizard.
Available on: Windows XP Professional. Automated System Recovery is not
available on Windows XP Home Edition.
For more information, see Automated System Recovery overview.

Feature: Windows Installation compact disc
When to use it: When you cannot start the computer in Safe Mode, neither
Last Known Good nor Recovery Console has been successful, and you have no
backup to use with Automated System Recovery.
What it does: Reinstalls the operating system. You will then need to
reinstall your applications and restore your data files from backups.
Available on: All versions of Windows XP.

no success . I am not able to do any of the above. I even tried to boot my computer with Knoppix...and it ALMOST worked. I got passed the startup initialization screen, but it then hangs...only showing the Knoppix desktop background.

This is starting to sound more like a hardware issue. Is that plausible? Which peice of hardware could cause this? I'm thinking either RAM or HD. any thoughts?

I'm thinking memory or hard disk controller. You indicated already that you tested the memory.

Do you have a hard drive you can substitute temporarily?

Anyone else have some ideas for the swami?

If you have SP2 you can turn off autoreboot and then tell us the stop code information....

well i finally found a "solution" to the problem. It's not pretty. I created a DOS boot disk using a different computer and ran a manual debug. I deleted the master HD, leaving me with no partitions on the hard drive. I then ran FDISK to reformat the computer using a non-NTFS file system (fat16). I then used a Windows XP SP2 slipstream to format the fat16 partition and re-create my original partitions (C and D). Finally computer has booted to XP 2 again...but this process has not been entertaining. Unfortunately, i still do not know the exact cause of the problem, but I am holding a faulty media driver as suspect.

Do not download the newest version of KaZaa lite with XP look features. I noticed problems after doing this. Use an old version with basic features.

Anyways, there's the recap incase it happens to anyone...thanks for the effort morkinva

It wouldn't be a device driver if you got a BSOD while trying to load the recovery console - that suggests disk issue to me.... if you BSOD during recovery console operation, none of your c:\windows drivers are loading at all.

Still sounds like a hardware issue or disk issue (which formatting may have resolved) to me....

Do a parallel install, and then give me the minidump file and perhaps I can tell you what's wrong with your system.
