HI
I have a Oontz portable speaker I.ve been using with a Samsung tablet. The tablet is old and the battery runs down fast. My thought is to buy a blue tooth transitter, connect it to my desktop and use that to transmit music throughout the house. The house is a small ranch and furthest room is about 35 feet away from the desktop pc I would use. I've seen blue tooth usb units that had a 100 ft range.
Do I need any specific type of blue tooth transmitter to do this?
When I use the tablet it "sees" the Oontz speaker. Will a add on blue tooth usb connected to the desktop work the same way???
Your thoughts?
Thanks

Bluetooth transmitter meaning adding a USB type Bluetooth add-on? It's possible, but the signal strength is going to depend on the device. Both devices. The adapter you buy and the speakers you use. In general most Bluetooth speakers, even with line of sight outdoors in the open, you're lucky if you can get 25 feet. Again it does depend on both devices.

No, except as discussed in the next paragraph, you wouldn't need a "special" transceiver/BT adapter for the PC, and yes, if it's they're within range of each other, the portable speaker and PC would "see" each other pretty much the same way your tablet and the speaker do now. (Though the BT user interface on the PC might not be quite as smoothly integrated as on the tablet, in the sense of a convenient little widget or whatever popping up nicely and obviously whenever they're in range.)

But as to that 100 feet range you've seen, hopefully that was specifically referring to Class 1 BT devices because otherwise it's a gross exaggeration of typical Bluetooth range. "Most" BT devices are Class 2, which has a specced range of only 10 meters (which means in practice, it's usually less, but occasionally a little more). There is a higher-powered "Class 1" Bluetooth intended to broadcast over a range of 30 meters, but for starters, to achieve the full range, both devices have to be Class 1 (and I'd be surprised if your speaker is anything but Class 2). You might get a little bit of a signal boost with a Class 1 adapter on your computer, but a BT connection transmits handshaking signals in both directions, even if you're just "transmitting" from one device to the other, so you're very unlikely to get anywhere near 100 feet even in a straight line. And fwiw, finding Class 1 Bluetooth adapters is hard enough, I think you'll find that Class 1-enabled "devices" like speakers are even rarer still...

One thought is that if your portable speaker has a wired auxiliary input, you might be able to use some sort of wifi audio receiver connected directly to the portable speaker. Not only would you get a longer range, you'd get better sound, too...

Bluetooth has 100 ranges when there is no line of sight issues. Once you have a wall, the range drops significantly. Bluetooth is NOT ideal for whole house audio, get a chrome cast audio.
