Definitely looks good, although that M bumper is a bit overboard. The 228i sounds pretty awesome. 0-60 in 5.4 with likely awesome gas mileage...yes please.

I'm a little out of the BMW loop; but are there now 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 series?

From what I understand.. sedans will be odd numbers, coupes/convertibles even numbers. This is the new 1-series.

Can't wait to price this out. A 228i with nav/M-sport packages sounds like the ideal one for me.

I think the 1-series is being discontinued. I haven't read anything about making the 1 the Sedan version of the 2 though.

2 comfort coupe/new C class might be it for me. Not really liking how all the new BMWs drive

I miss the NA I6. Best engine in the world now gone from our shores.

I miss the weight and feel of the old hydraulic steering; the new electric units are boring, dull, and lifeless.

That said, I would like to take a 228i for a test drive (with all of the ///M package goodies).

Weird. So this is RWD and the current 1-series is switching to FWD. So they are essentially migrating the current 1-series and making this it. Along the way, RWD 2-series will no longer have the power available of the current 1-series, and the new 1-series will be FWD with less power as well.

This is a lot of smokescreen essentially over the current 1-series being made crappy. Not a big fan. Boo.

Audi steering is also dull and lifeless.

What is MB using these day? Electric or hydraulic?

Not 100% sure but my parents new 2014 E350 sport better than the loaner 2013 328i that I had a couple months ago. I really hate their new soft-found approach, even their new commercials are retarded.

Tis a shame.

It is funny that they need to create a 1 series and this 2-series which are probably about the size/weight the old e30 3-series used to be; and the new 3-series looks to be as big as the 5-series was at one point.

It's 200 lbs. lighter than the 1 series. I'll take a 2 anyday of the week and not feel remotely ashamed.

I can afford either but if given the choice, I'd take the smaller, lighter car. I am not impressed with the new 3 at all.

Ditto. Not very impressed with the 3/4 series this go around. Especially now that they're pretty much E39 sized.

The F30 is an uninspiring mess. I took a look at a 335i but it just doesn't have the driving characteristics of my E90.

Question: Given the fact a few people in here are not impressed by the newer 3 series... Why the hell do C & D and other auto mags keep saying how great the BMW is year after year after year? Is the editor banging somebody in BMW corporate?? I don't get it. Are their reviews really that biased? And if the BMW really is, according to some of you.. A bit lifeless..Then what car(s) didn't take that route and are still fun to drive?

I''m wondering because I planned to test drive a 2012 335i and Audi A5 and possibly S4 (all 2012s).

I actually own a new 3 series. Had a current gen a4 quattro (2010) and the new 3 is a much better car to drive. All the cars in this segment have gotten a little big but the 3 easily is far more balanced and feels more tossable than the audi. Plus my Audi had hydraulic steering and I'd say steering feel was about the same as the new electric f30. Not sure how the 2012+ Audi's feel as they are electric too. Seeing as you are looking at the bigger engined cars it might be a little different but the Audi's just plow and understeer. Its just not as fun , maybe the s4 would be OK with torque vectoring but I'd still rather just have a better weight balanced car. I'd say the only thing I liked better in the a4 was the fact I never had to own a set of runflats and the interface for browsing through mp3 and Sirius radio stations was a little nicer

Listening to a bunch of internet commentators who don't own the cars is not really going to tell you much. I really like the new 2 series especially since its lighter and smaller. I would be tempted very much to trade in my 328 m sport 8at for a 228 m sport 6mt in a year or two ( seems like getting a manual I could justify as a reason to myself to sell a 2-3 year old car)

Probably because the E350 Sport is not linear to a 328i, under any circumstances - it's not even the same class and kind of silly to compare. The closest comparison to a dealer loaned base-model 328i would be a base-model C250. The E-class compares with the BMW 5-series.

Apples to oranges.

The current 3-series is in dire need of a refresh. Currently it makes significantly more sense to get a M-Sport 328 than it does a 335. Once they threw a turbo on the 328 bringing it up to 240hp vs. the 300hp 335, and then added the 8-speed transmission.. realistically speaking the difference in feel between a M-sport 328i and M-sport 335i is marginal at best. Kind of a catch-22, because if you give a significant boost to the 335i bring it back in line with being worth the additional price without first doing the dramatic refresh of the M3 they're currently doing, they shoot themselves in the foot.

Just strange to watch how they're staggering their refreshes on the same series lines.

Disclaimer: I've owned more luxury cars than I can shake a stick at and have a very open preference towards BMW as an optimal all-around vehicle. I drove a dealer-loaned IS-F for a few weeks when working with a Lexus dealership and they ended up selling it at to another dealer because it sat in their lot too long - it was just a mess of a car. Mercedes is finally starting to catch up, but still nowhere near worth my money. I had a decked out CTS-V and feel it was just trying too hard to look different (see: too angular and their signature chrome is out of style), and all the models simply made too much noise for my taste as I'm an adult and don't really care to hear boy racer exhaust tones. Admittedly I miss my old S4, regardless very few cars I've driven in this price range ($50,000-$120,000) have anything on BMW in the US.

Welfare recipients are a huge luxury car market judging by the number of 128/328 and C250s seen at trailer parks.
