Well, we know why the Passat W8 got last place. It was $1,300 more expensive than even the 3-Series and $6,500 more than the A4 (which was the second fastest vehicle in the test behing the G35)!!! It weighed OVER TWO TONS...give me a friggen break. It lacked features, it looks like ass, and it was the slowest car in the bunch even though it had the most HP and torque.
What a lump of sh!t
I think not. It is certainly better than the crappy Mercedes and much better than the Acura and Infiniti in interior, luxury and design. The Infiniti and Acura would however beat it in handling. But then the VW is meant to be a luxury tourer and not an outright sports model like the A4 or the 330i.
Also something's certainly wrong with C&D's testing/driving the W8 passat. VW's quoted figure for the US W8 is 0-60 in 6.5 seconds and VW is generally super conservative in giving figures unlike Nismo and Honda-cura crowd. The European version of W8 Passat has a different final gearing giving it a lesser 0-60 timing. Wonder whether C&D tested a pre-US release version?
Also later this year VW's gonna release the W8 with 6 speed and sport suspensions. That should easily beat the pants of all the crowd bar the new A4 and 330i.
And the reason A4 handled a bit floppyly is due to the tires. It' had a 15 inch and higher profile tire than the BMW. What do you expect to happen? Given the proper tires the new A4 though being a FWD easily beats the 330i.
