Drivers of BMWs frequently come in for anecdotal criticism for habits on the road that are perceived as aggressive.

Now, a couple of studies, one in the U.S. and another from the U.K., appear to provide statistical evidence that BMW drivers are, to be polite about it, complete jerks.

In the older study, by researchers at the University of California, BMW drivers were far less likely to stop for a pedestrian who had just entered a crosswalk, the New York Times notes.

“In our crosswalk study, none of the cars in the beater-car category drove through the crosswalk. They always stopped for pedestrians," researcher Paul K. Piff told the paper. He added that not only were "fancy cars were less likely to stop," but also that "BMW drivers were the worst."

Drivers of BMWs and other high-status cars (including Prius hybrids) were also more likely to cheat at four-way-stop intersections, according to the research.

In the second study, in the U.K., motorists were asked to identify the make and color of the car from which they have most frequently suffered road-rage incidents, the Daily Mail reports.

The study of 2,837 motorists found men between the ages of 35 and 50 driving blue BMWs were most likely to be reported as having engaged in road-rage behaviors such as aggressive driving and swearing.

Are they sure it's blue BMW drivers?

You generally dont get to be rich if you play by the rules, so its not a surprise that BMW owners don't either. Kinda surprising that a Prius is considered a high status car. Prius drivers always seem overly cautious, but I could see how a person might buy a Prius because they think that makes them a better person. That kind of person might feel entitled to go to the head of the line, because they are better than everyone else. But not surprised by the BMW thing. Any high priced car is going to attract a certain type of person. I guess the Prius falls into the holier than thou category.

Are BMW drivers automatically considered rich?

Aw shit I was going to say something but I guess one of the cars I drive is #2 on the list.

I don't get road rage though.

Richer than most I would think. Even someone who buys one used or leases is probably the same type of person, just not as successful.
Probably even worse since they are frustrated for not making it like the brand new BMW owners.

Don't fully stop, or go through even if the person on your right was before you or stopped at the same time as you. What kind of question is this?

IMO, that's like saying you're "cheating" by running a red light.

I think the person is implying that you always take turns in a circle, even when it makes sense for 2 sides to go at the same time...and I don't agree with that.

I always treated a 4-way as first come, first serve in no particular geometric shape.

A number of the drivers who would have owned BMW in the past are driving Audis now.

Which explains why Audi is #3 on the UK list.

Well, yeah, why wouldn't you be cheating by running a red light? You either follow the rules of the road or you don't.

"Cheating" sounds like they're talking about something that's unfair, but not something against the rules.

I dunno. I just thought they might be complaining about increasing throughput by going when there's an opportunity...which only benefits the other drivers as long as they're paying attention to which sides have gone and which sides haven't.

I drive a BMW, and I don't think I'm a jerk :'(

There, there. It's not like they are saying all BMW drivers are jerks.
But if you have money and can afford "the ultimate driving machine", there's a good chance statistically that you will drive it aggressively because you can.

And when I say "you", I don't mean you specifically, just BMW owners in general. Which is why I pointed out the Audi thing, since Audi is the closest competitor to BMW model to model. Mercedes is another high-end German competitor to BMW, but they skew more luxury and aim at a different sort of driver, at least a bit.

If you have the ultimate driving machine, you should drive like it's the ultimate driving machine. BMW are built for the autobahn.
