how many people who pick the G35 obviously drove the M3 to it's limits?

I don't think he's asking which car is better on direct comparison... he's asking if the $50-55k for an M3 is worth it over the $35-40k for a G35. The M3 is obviously better on specs alone. But is the difference worth $20k?

oh, my bad

well, if you're not going to drive the hell out of it, then it's not worth the difference.

Actually I have with both cars. Have you taken the G35 to its limits? Somehow I get the feeling that you haven't.

no i haven't - frankly the dealer wouldn't let me, i've only test drove the g35. but i did experience the M3, and i'm not dropping my $$$ on the g35, but that's my opinion.

That's an interesting comparison. In terms of price the G35c is to the M3 like the M3 is to the CLK55

I agree that the G35 is way too common around here. If I got a G35, I'd spice it up a little bit, I think it's pretty low already (or just looks that way), but with some extras (aka ricing it out to most of ATOT), it would become special in it's own right. When someone says M3, I just think "wow" immediately. I think you get more bang for the buck with the G35, and it's probably fast enough for the majority of people, but whether or not 20k is worth the M sign and some extra specs depends totally on your income.

Like I heard someone say today, a car is the worst investment you can make. It'll depreciate so fast that the only reason to buy an expensive car is if u have money left over

The G35 only had an engine mod on oil cooling. I can't find that vid, but Boyracer might be able to help. Seriously, for 20 more grands, I could make the G35 a freaking speed demon, if it's not already is.

I do agree with Mani on the styling cues also. The M3 has had subtle changes in it's styling since the late 80's, even though it looks nice, but I think the G35 is teh sexy.

Yep... here's the thread about that vid.

So basically, you proclaim the M3 unequivocally better, calling out G35 drivers who haven't taken the M3 to its limits, yet you haven't even done the same with the G?

The two cars' handling abailities are nearly identical. Watch the M3vG35vZ Best motoring video. The M3 was dead even with the G around corners and could only pass it on the final straightaway. And this was against the JDM skyline, which doesn't have the superior Michelin Pilot Sports the US coupes get.

i'd admit i didn't get to - it'd be nice if i got a chance, but my post was based my experience driving my buddy's m3 and test driving the nissan. so if i sound like a hyprocrite, then i'm guilty.

I've sat in both, drove the G35. Fit and finish on the M3 is better, and from my experience with BMW's, it will hold up better over the years. G35 had decent power, but steering feedback, throttle resopnse, and turn-in were lacking. I own both a 735 and a E30 325is, and I perfer driving the 325is every day over almost every car I've tried. If your'e looking for a car to get you places, G35. If you're looking for a car that you enjoy driving, go BMW - even if it means you go with a 330ci w/sport package.... or even an E30 M3

Anyway, in terms of a sports car, the M3 wins hands down. I can floor the G35 and people don't really notice all too much. When I have passengers in the M3, they hold on for dear life. Comfortwise, the G35 wins for driver and front passenger. The seats are pretty nice and the ride is extremely supply compared to my M3 (keep in mind my M3 has 19" vs the G35 with 18"). The rear space sucks for both cars but the G35 is worse because of the slant of the roofline. Even if you're 5'6", your head will touch the glass in the rear seats.

After owning the G35 for a few months, I can say that the build quality is definitely not comparable to the BMW. The gas door is plastic and looks like it's loose even when it's closed. The interior trim feels fragile (prone to paint scratching off, etc.) Both cars drive solid and are very fun however. The M3 is obviously a lot faster. Accelerationwise, a 330Ci would be a better comparison. Handling, I'd give the edge to the M3, but the G35 is definitely very worthy. I don't like the longer wheelbase of the G35 (I'm not sure if it's longer but it feels like it is). Also, the turning radius is worse in the G and I find it hard to park in tight parking spots in LA. The M3 has no problem. The brakes on both cars are excellent as well.

If you compare the cars pricewise, the G35 wins in most categories. The G35 is completely loaded and only cost ~40k out the door. The M3 has all the bells and whistles except for heated seats, headlight washers, and lumbar support. Out the door was ~66. The 26g's extra is worth it if you're willing to pay for the speed and build quality. Otherwise the G35 is an awesome car to own. There's not much else out there that can touch it. =)

If you got any more questions, just ask.

There's another guy on freshalloy with both...that's gotta be nice.

I agree about the interior trim by the way, by far the G's greatest flaw.

If I made 75K a year, I'd buy the G35 Coupe.

If I made 100K a year, I'd buy the M3.

Actually, if I made those numbers, I'd realistically buy 5 or 6 different awesome used cars for the same price. An E36 M3, a Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, an A2 VW GTI 16 valve, a bike of some sort, and a V6 Tacoma with a solid front axle swap and some big mudders. And some change to boot.

I also like that no one brand dominates anymore, even BMW seems to have slipped a bit with the new 5. While reading, I stumbled on to a bit of a philosophical debate. The E46 BMW 3-series is the undisputed champ in its class and is now the perennial overdog, and the is just as fantastic as ever. The Infiniti G35 Coupe interested me though, too, and seems to offer a HELL of a lot for it's $36000 asking price. So my question is this: do you think the BMW M3, priced at $56k, is worth the $20k premium over the Infiniti G35 Coupe? Why?

do I personally think it's worth it?

NOPE!
you'll never see me in a German car.. overpriced.

Japanese for life... give me the G35C and 20 grand to work with... you got yourself a North American Skyline!!

I love those cars stock. imagine with a supercharger and some 19's... *DROOL*

that kicks!!

the way i see it, if you want to over pay for the best in the market, you can't beat the m3. sure the audi has come out w/ a 340 horse v8 but you also have to remember that the e46 platform is 5 years old. you know that bmw will try their best to blow the audis away w/ their new m cars, both the m3,4 vs the s4 and m5 vs the rs6.. and i think they will since it'll be a newer car.

but for an everyday car, the m3 maybe a bit punishing, with the stiff shocks and all. (same for the s4) i like my 330i pp that has the good looks of the m, but w/ everyday driving comfort of the e46 sedans. besides, if i can't even push my car to the limits, what the hell am i gonna do w/ the m? driving does involve more than just having ton o horses under the hood.
