I like it but the disadvantages make it impractical. People can get close with a wrap and get to take it off in a couple of years.

Looks like an old oxidized paint. Why anyone would want that is beyond me. Glossy>frozen. This new frozen scheme seems like a step back.

What they really ought to do is increase the clearcoat thickness by applying more coats.

I was intrigued at first. Then I was un sold as soon as soon as he showed the example of what happens when you try to buff it.

No kidding, "We here at BMW have spent years of research to develop a paint surface which is no longer serviceable by the customer and will require repainting whenever the paint surface is damaged."

"We are in the process of developing vehicles that will require highly trained dealer technicians to refresh the gasoline fluid levels in your car. We hope to one day to take this complicated process out of our customer's hands."

They are seriously working in this direction. No Dipsticks for Engine or Transmissions Fluids like many of the VW's and more are doing the same every year.

Honestly, I hate dipsticks. For the life of me trying to read some of them on the super thin oils that's still clean is almost impossible. I can't understand why that hasn't been introduced as some kind of digital sensor/readout.

Why can't they put a gauge on there that shows "5.0 Qt - Full" if your engine takes 5 quarts of oil and then have a realtime readout based on the last time the car was parked and the oil was allowed to pool back in the pan? If you are a quart low show a "4 quart" marker below the 5.0 Full line.

USDM MR2 Turbos (1991-1995 IIRC) have an oil level warning light (as well as the useless oil pressure light), so it has been done quite some time ago.

My car (Oldsmobile Intrigue) also has an "Add Oil" warning light on the dash. I was able to use it as the first sign that my intake manifold gaskets were going.

Its pretty sweet looking. I wonder if greasy hands on doors and the trunk are permanent. Refinishing for every little thing is such a hassle, but it does look sweet.

Therin lies the problem. What are you going to do for bird bombs for example? The matte finish means it has a rough almost porous like surface which unwanted crap can stick to better. Well you can't just buff it out. So you need a repaint anytime a bird craps on your car? You've got to be kidding right? Or you have to wash it immediately because if that acid stain sets you=teh screwed.

I think it's just those disgusting red wheels, take that away, and it would be fine, change the rondel back to something tasteful and it would be amazing

I bet insurance companies love this matte BMW paint.

I know I'm the minority, but I have never given a shit about the paint job. Yeah, I like it to look nice and do its job protecting the body panels (so yeah address scratches and chips and stuff), but I'm never going to baby the paint. If its a car I liked enough to care much about that I'd budget for a new paint job every so often. Or say, if I had one of the new Vipers I would get some nice vinyl wraps and have them put on by someone that won't fuck it up. I think it'd be especially cool there for the snake skin metaphor (yes I know that's silly).

As for matte, I like it fine and I like glossy fine, just depends on the actual color, style (stripes or accents included) and overall look of the car.

Anyone remember the guy that does $50,000 clean jobs (obviously that's an oversimplification) on Veyrons and stuff?

Personally, I don't care at all about rock chips (hood, bumper, behind wheels). It's almost like how a leather jacket gets worn in or something.

Now, door dings =

BTW here's the other angle:

I agree with changing the red to something a lot more subtle. This guy pulled over and parked, then reached in the back seat for his infant in a carrier. Amazing that it was humming pretty loud the whole time and he's subjecting his baby to it.
