Settlers of Catan: good introduction to more "hardcore", often german, board games. I played the crap out of this way back when, but rarely these days, I dislike dice. Fun family game.

Yeah, I really loved Catan the first few times I played it, but the dice rolling is just too random for me. I really like games centered around cards like Dominion and 7 Wonders because they're less random - sure, you get unlucky hands sometimes, but it's up to you to make the right decisions throughout the game (especially early on!) so you can succeed. With Catan, a string of poor dice rolls can utterly ruin you.

Also it doesn't help that my dad is a total space case who can't keep his cards straight and takes a really long time on his turn. Even though he's played a ton (and often wins). Waiting for inexperienced players to complete their turns and make futile trade requests is frustrating. That's another nice thing about Dominion; it's very easy to help new players in the early stages of the game because revealing your hand isn't really the end of the world.

The only Axis and Allies I will play is the anniversary edition (the one that goes for $300).

Our one gaming group religiously plays Monopoly. All kinds of deals are made... partial profits, future rent payouts, partial immunity, future trade rights, etc. We keep trying different rules as well, 3 D6, 1 D20, go counter clockwise, shuffle all cards into a single deck (makes that go back 3 squares very interesting).

I have a soft spot in my heart for Acquire. I am always up for a game of the friendmaker... Diplomacy, but you really need 6-7 players.

[edit]Currently in card games, we have been playing a lot of Tichu. Decent team game and I am hoping this will draw the other members of the group into trying Bridge or at least Pinochle.

I've been reading about Diplomacy - would LOVE to give that a try, but the rest of the family (read: in-laws) would never go for it. They're more of an Apples to Apples crowd (which can be fun, but I'm looking for strategy and such).

I was looking at Runewars - it's certainly more hardcore than anything we've tried, but if we like it, it opens up a whole new world to us. I know my son would absolutely eat it up.

I also did a lot of reading up on Axis and Allies, and came to the same conclusion you posted: the one worth the time is $300

Runewars is awesome. It's really fun with 2 but shines with 3 and 4 players. It's an awesome mix of conquest, war, fantasy, politics and diplomacy (in form of bids), tactics, questing with heroes, etc.

It's the perfect game for those who don't mind little downtimes between their turns. You need at least 3 hours for a game but everytime you'll put it on the table, you'llbe in for an epic treat.

Unopened is more like $600. $300 will get you an opened used copy. Mine is beat to snot as it was the goto copy and has been to multiple places and conventions. My friends are keeping their copies as nice as possible. I am working on making a custom game-board for the map so I can use larger miniatures than the ones it comes with.

Diplomacy, when played right will piss off many players. I highly recommend only playing the game with gamers who KNOW that they will be screwed. What happens in Diplomacy stays in Diplomacy.

I know it's early but i'd strongly recommend the expansion Banners of War. It adds some cool stuff without adding more rules. New cities, new units, new heroes, new tiles...new awesomeness!

I got both and couldn't be more happier...if only I had more peeps to play this damn...that's my only complaint...my gaming buddies are sissies...

Personal favorite.

I'm also quite fond of Illumiiati, but my copy seems to have gone missing.

I played a game of Sorry that ended in my pregnant sister storming off crying. Love that game.

Current favorite game: Bananagrams

Most of my favorites have already been covered here. The only one I'll add is Ricochet Robots. It's especially nice because it's a short game, while most other board games take several hours. The only problem is that the game is unforgiving: small differences in ability can mean that some dominate the game while other always feel a step behind.

Hero Quest
Descent: Journey in the Dark.
Any dumbed down version of D&D with maps and miniatures.
There was a time in the early 90's when they revamped D&D with a black beginners box. Had a cute little collection of cards, paper minis, and a nice map. You read each card one at a time and slowly learned the rules. It was actually pretty fun. By the time I was finished I already scoped out my local Great Goblin store and picked up the Rules Cyclopedia.

Axis & Allies is a classic; woe is me that I haven't played in 15 years or so.

If we're considering some of the card games that play like board games my current favorite is Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot. (Without the stupid Zodiac rules)

I would disagree with this. I like the changes they've made, they make sense. But I've had tons of fun playing vanilla A&A. One caveat is number of players. 4-5 is ideal, three is kind of bad. Never tried with just two.
