I call those bored games now
It is a damn shame you are so short minded to think that. Move on from chutes and ladders and give the gateway game a try: "Ticket to Ride".

I am always up for a good game of Acquire, Diplomacy, or any 18xx.

The wife and I get the kids together to play Monopoly like once a month. Board games still gave their place but it's tough to pull people away from their TV's these days.

No one in my family likes board games. I prefer Monopoly and Risk but they take a long time, so no one ever wants to play them.

Ticket to ride is boring

Also, do all board gamers act so pompous?

Defensive is more like it. The guy enters into a thread, shits all over it, and I respond. I could have been much harsher what with the probability of ADHD keeping him from enjoying a nice long in depth board game but decided instead to just stick with short minded.

I referred to Ticket to Ride as a gateway game, chances are if somebody does not like that game, they will probably not like most Euro style board games. Perhaps they would enjoy a combat based game by AH or whatnot.

However, when I find people looking down at board games in general, it is typically because their only experiences is with the childhood games (Chutes and Ladders) or Monopoly where players do not stick to the rules or know how to make deals.

Regarding Monopoly, there is a LOT more to trade than just money and property... future rights, partial payouts, immunity (specific, complete, or limited), etc. Everything is worth something, it is both players' responsibility to figure out what that is. A cut-throat game of Monopoly in our group takes about an hour to play.

I really haven't played much recently, but the ones I use to play the most were Battletech, Star Fleet Battles, Blood Bowl, Space Hulk, War at Sea, Victory in the Pacific, Axis & Allies, and Samurai Swords (Shogun).

For some reason I completely forgot about chess. Once in a while I'd play that, but for some reason my mind doesn't count it as a board game.

So Vic in the Pacific was the first non chess game I played in a long time. I liked the concept, disliked the actual play bc of so many dice rolls and time spent setting up, but I enjoyed the experience even tho I doubt I'd play it again unless online. But that was my gateway into Terra Mystica. If it wasn't for VitP, I probably would have blatantly refused to join a game of TM.

People write off board games 'cause they only ever played Milton Bradley crap you get at the department stores. There are a lot of great, deep games out there if you know what to look for. Trouble is a good game normally cost $40-60. Not $20. That's a hard sell for someone who has never had a good experience. I just like them because its an excuse to get together with my buds in person and socialize.

My problem with every "advanced" board game I have played is that you can lose for hours. What I mean by that is that it can be clear early on who the winner will be, and then you have to accept slow death as the events play out.

So to me, the only point of board games in 2014 is to teach children sportsmanship and how to be gracious winners and losers.

I play twice a week and generally we're into heavy games like: Arkham/Eldritch Horror, Runewars, Eclipse, Dust Tactics, Mansions of Madness, Claustrophobia, Space Hulk 3rd edition, Android the board game, Mage Knight, Merchant of Venus, etc

Plus some other cool games like Thunderstone Advance, Blood Bwol Team Manager, Diskwars, DunegonQuest, Cadwallon City of Thieves, Quarriors, etc.

I also play lots of LCGs from FFG, Netrunner and Call of Cthulhu mainly with some LOTR mixed in.

It's just fun to play a game with real humans lol and not some shitty screaming assheads over a mic.

Man oh man i loves me some board games.

Oldies but goodies that i dont play muchbthses days; Axis &Allies, Carcassonne, Citadels, Dominion

I play Ticket to Ride: Europe with the wife fairly frequently

I got Descent 2nd Edition for christmas and finally got my buddies over for a play through. Fantastic game.

Then theres the old classic Hero Quest which my 6 and 8 year old adore.

Id like to play Arkham Horror more, but its soooooo slow and the games take forever.
