Would this really make a difference in speed? You usually can't connect any faster because of the people in the neighborhood. You would need something to split up the requests so that both lines each take 50% of the download. Cable companies would also love to charge you double for this.

What would be the point?

You mean like, it combines the two channels.. and somehow you end up with twice the bandwidth? Kinda like the old two-modems in one Shotgun modems, where you could use 2 lines and connect at like 75k

Well, it would be interesting... but...

It certainly wouldn't be worth twice the price... I'm happy with my cap at 1500k/256k... It's never any slower than that.

No broadband ISP will support anything like that except possibly a smaller DSL provider who wouldn't have to implement it on a network across the nation. Too much work and cost to implement for the very few people that desire it, and they'd rather upgrade you to a faster speed with a business account. I've seen nothing about Linksys or D-Link creating such an item either, as their product lines are designed for low-cost usage. High-end equipment such as from Cisco can easily load-balance traffic but that's designed for T1's and higher; I doubt their DSL product lines can do it. Netopia makes routers which can bond two ports but again, your ISP will have to support it (at the very least, they have to route your IP block over both connections so the traffic will load-balance).

The term you want is also "bonding" of connections.

What do you need "ASAP" exactly? If you so desperately need bandwidth, you should be considering something besides a residential line. If 1.5Mbps downloads or 256k to 500k upload speeds aren't enough, you're probably doing something you shouldn't be (violating terms of service or copyright law immensely).

hikki: are you thinking maybe of the new wireless standard that's coming out? the 802.11g routers were just recently released by linksys which are compatible with both the g AND the b bands combining the flexibility of the 802.11b standard with the 54mbps sustained speed of the 802.11g frequency... i haven't heard of anything about a connection doubling device that you're speaking of.
