Did Gillian die?
That's an unanswered question. I'm not sure if she received enough drugs to OD or if she's just high. My presumption was she used enough like she did when she killed that guy, so enough to make her lucid.
Did Gillian die?
too bad the buildup for van alden didn't go anywhere.
One story element that made zero sense to me; Why did Mellon turn in Rothstein to the DA over Overholt when he was perfectly willing to let Nucky run it for a percentage? Nucky had literally nothing Mellon would want to use as a bargaining chip to get him to flip on Rothstein, and if the DA shutters Overholt, it's not like Nucky can get it running again to make Mellon a profit. So what's the angle from Mellon's side? He has absolutely no reason to care about the beef between Rothstein and Nucky, and by shuttering Overholt, the only outcome is less personal profit. I don't get that story element at all.
did they ever say Gaston Means has dirt on Mellon? a little cash from nucky would let him screw rothstein for not support nucky vs gyp
OK, but even with that, what does Nucky have on Means to get him on his side? Money? I'm pretty sure Gaston Means could extort a lot more out of Mellon than he could get from Nucky if he actually had something on him. I couldn't figure the angle where Nucky has anything that either Mellon or Means would want to engage in such a deal, especially seeing as how it is costing Mellon a considerable sum of money.
To be fair, Mellon never once initiated a meeting with Thompson. They had the initial meeting where Nucky introduced himself and made a proposal, after which Mellon had him expelled from the club. Then Mellon made a single phone call to Nucky to agree to his terms. There was no other contact between them. In fact, he expressly said that they would have no further contact after the phone call. He clearly was protecting himself from being associated with Nucky.I enjoy James Cromwell in just about anything he's in, but really? The real Andrew Mellon would never have met in person with a Nucky Thompson. No one who reaches that stage of wealth and power would risk it by coming into contact with even the most powerful bootlegger. Otherwise, good season. I want to see Richard's and Capone's characters develop.
With all due to respect to the critics, I think they may have missed the deeper meanings of the show.
A substantial part of the show is about life in the 1920's. And how Prohibition affected so many parts of that life.
