Just got back from the gym trainer, i went to get my measurements, biceps, thighs, waist, etc. and get my body fat %, I really had no idea what it woud be but it ended up being 16.5%, which i guess is ok, I am 6'4" and weigh 195. Don't know if that body fat% is any good. Do you guys/gals know your body fat %??

I used to be 6'4" and 212. My body fat was around 12.5%.

It's gone up because I have a desk job now and my weight is around 216 now.... I have less muscle because I don't work out as often. You're about normal.

is there a calculation you can do to figure this out or do you have to measure everything?

I believe that you're below average for an american male, so that's good at least. I saw a chart listing the average body fat percentages of different types of athletes (the overall average is 6-13%). Golfers were on the higher end, somewhere around 13-15; NBA players were around 10, and cross-country olympians were the lowest at around 5-6. Necessary body fat for a male is 2-4%, and the acceptable range is 18-25% according to the American Council on Exercise.

So looks like you're "acceptable."

As for your question: I'm sitting right around 7% myself.

Edit: And spooner, you have to measure everything. They have scales that can measure it, but the home variety are generally fairly inaccurate. The cheapest and most accurate way available to most people is what the original poster did, and that's see a personal trainer/health professional and have them brake out the calipers.

You can also use water displacement or electrical pulse, but those are both much more expensive.

Hyperactive Gastrointestinal Disorder w/ Ciliac Sprew. Basically, I can't eat anything with gluten, and my metablolism is about 10x normal. It sucks, I have a 50% higher chance of getting stomach cancer than the average American.

Sounds like you need to hit the weights

I'm 6', 190 lbs and I hover between 12% and 13% BF

I wouldn't mind getting it to around 8%, but I'm not really willing to make the sacrifices needed to do it. It's a case of diminishing returns.

I test bodyfat on alot of people and everyone and I mean *EVERYONE* under estimates their bodyfat percentage. I doubt most people here even KNOW what 7% bodyfat looks like! This is what bodybuilders who have carb depleted for weeks and taken diuretics to remove water retention...you know with the rock hard abs, veins bulging everywhere....THAT IS SEVEN PERCENT.

The average healthy person will have bodyfat ranging from 12-17%.

Whoever said 2-4% bodyfat. Gimme a break, nobody healthy will ever achieve that. Bodybuilders do occassionally for competitions but they take a ton of drugs in order to attain that.

Tested by what method. There are only a couple of methods that are reliable, and capliers are notorious for not being accurate....just curious.

Anyways, what I said still holds: everyone and their brother that I know thinks that they're 10% bodyfat when they're more like 15-20%.

I got down to between 2 and 4 percent when I was cutting weight for wrestling in high school. We used the tape measure and the calipers and both came out to be about the same. My skin was literally transparent in most areas, at least it looked that way. I vowed after that never to do it again. It was too freaky.

I think the doctor called it Bioelectric Impedence, or something to that extent.

Yup. Do a google search for "Tanita".

I have one, works pretty well. It's not absolutely accurate, but it's relatively accurate (ie- you can track fat loss on a weekly basis with reasonable accuracy). They're sensitive to how much stuff you have in your intestines/stomach and how hydrated you are so you have to measure yourself at the same time of day after a trip to the can to get decent results.

I've never gotten a professional evaluation (with water displacement or calipers) but the impedance scales and tape measurement methods seem to put me around 10%. I'm 5'11" and somewhere between 175 and 180 lbs.
