What do they get out of this? It looks ridiculous. I think fascinations with skulls and the "goth" look is jeuvinille and quite frankly stupid, but this is taking it to the extreme.

It is not that different, except in a location virtually unconcealable. If you get a lot of tattoos on your arms, torso, and legs you can easily cover them up and be a functional member of society. If you cut off your nose to spite Captain America, good luck!
