Interesting article. What is interesting is how old some aircraft designs really are, and how old the projects leading up to the prototypes are even older. The F-14 first flew in 1969. The F-15 in 1972, and the F-16 in 1974. However, design studies for these planes began much earlier than that, but it gives you and idea as to how much earlier engineers and scientists knew about new ideas and phenomenons before they appeared on actual aircraft.
Many people don't understand how the A-12 family of planes (YF-12, SR-71) were designed with some radar wave mitigating technologies like radar signal "traps" in the leading edges of the wing and chines.
I always looked at the F-14 as a prime turning point in fighter design, because it was deliberately designed to have the body produce a major portion of overall lift - about 40%. For American fighters, it was a return to creating fighters with a good maneuver envelope for close in dogfighting. This design directly influenced the Soviets in the design of the Su-27 and MiG-29 prototypes.
Also in consequence of stealth, Soviet fighters of the 80s popularized the Infrared Search and Track System (IRST) system that has seen a resurgence in western fighters now that they are reliable and powerful enough. Early IRST systems appeared in USAF fighters of the 1950s like the F-106, and even the YF-12, but were unreliable, added much complexity and of course didn't have the huge detection ranges of larger radars at the time. The F-35s EODAS system has very capable IR/Night Vision cameras that can detect major thermal signatures from extremely long ranges, so it doesn't need a dedicated IRST system at all AFAIK.
