Bogus "Paypal" e-mail scam....AGAIN!!

Got an e-mail tonight, that was supposedly from PayPal, asking me to verify my info. After seeing multiple warnings here about bogus e-mails that look like they're coming from PayPal, I checked the message headers and found this:

That's originating from Russia, if I'm reading it right? Also, there was a link to click in the message, that sent you here:

http://www.paypal.com/@211.113.186.42/pp/processing.htm

That's a dead giveaway. Even if you type www.paypal.com into your browser, it redirects to a secure server, or, in other words, https://www.paypal.com.

Oh, the "from" line in outlook express also showed it as coming from "Service", and nothing about paypal, which is also bogus.

So.........forwarned is forarmed........be wary!!

We do care about the scam and we do try to educate our user base about spoofs. The problem is not limited to PayPal (other sites have similar issues).

I had this post at another site to give our users even more information about how to spot one.

Hi All,

Many users in the forums post questions on a regular basis about the legitimacy of emails that appear to come from PayPal, eBay, or other sites. I think the information in this post will give users the ability to spot fake emails quickly, while also giving users a way to report the email(s) to our fraud team.

1. Emails that come from PayPal will reflect the name on your PayPal account (First and Last Name; Business Account name).

Emails will not read with the following introductions:

"Dear PayPal User"
"Dear PayPal Member"

It is also important to note that we will not ask you to give us your name because we already have that information on file.

2. PayPal will not ask for your password and email combination in an email.


3. PayPal will not ask for the following information in an email:

a) credit card numbers
b) banking account numbers
c) social security numbers
d) driver's license numbers
e) for the user to download something to *fix* their account
f) for the user to download something to have access to new features


As a reminder, a user can always check the status of their PayPal account by simply logging in at www.paypal.com ONLY.

Users that want to report a possible scam email report can direct an email to spoof@paypal.com.

Indeed... it's always the same. Just because the text changes a bit doesn't mean it's a totally new scam to watch out for. You can liken every scam to someone dressed in what looks like a Paypal uniform appearing on your doorstep to ask for your name, credit card # and other privies for whatever bogus reason. The heading of this thread suggests surprise -- it's not like these scams are ever going to go away. As long as there are ppl to be scammed, profit to be made, they will persist. Learn to deal with it.

You saw the title of the thread why did you enter the thred if it dont interest you. Did this post somehow interfer with your life? Did it take up some bandwidth that you have paid for? Or are you just trying to show that you are more intellegent than the starter of this thread?

Paypal is SUCK!!! They have locked my account with >$500 in it. They are unwilling to unlock it even when I show them all the papers, because they want a utility bill from a house that I used to live in two damn years ago!
