why do you think it is the water heater?

Why would the landlord pay your bill if you used that much energy? How in the world can one believe somebody else is responsible. You use, you pay, you are NOT entitled.

*smacks forehead*

gosh dang entitlement mentatlity makes me puke.

Why not look at the meter and see how fast it is moving. 1 by 1 turn off breakers until it slows down. Then back trace what runs off that breaker.

Oh and space heaters save a lot of money if used correctly. Me and my wife have a 2500+ sq foot house. We use programmable thermostats and a space heater in the bedroom. Since we did that our gas usage has almost dropped in half as we are not heating the whole house, but only our room and bathroom.

Space heaters are almost 100% efficient.

For energy-to-heat, yes.
For $$$-to-heat, no.

But even if you've got a 1500W spaceheater running all day and night, that'd be 36KWH.

As for something shorting out, I'd hope that a circuit breaker would take care of that. But maybe they're old and wearing out?

You're just screwed. We had a similar problem in a townhome we rented. We moved to a townhome in a different building and they didn't transfer our account to the right unit so we were getting billed for the electricity of someone else. 6 months later they call us and say "yeah, we weren't billing you for the right unit. You owe us $650 because you used more electricity than we billed you for. SURPRISE!!!"

We fought them (how we were supposed to know that we were using more electricity than we were getting billed for because they screwed up?), tried to negotiate the amount down, contacted the PUC.... they would not budge. We had to pay every penny.

from COW's wife:

i would suggest you talk to your neighbors to see if their electric bill is out of this world...ask your electric company for a daily breakdown of your bill, they can show you how many KWH you "used" per day...and if you find all these things come together to a common point.. IE: the drunk and the electric pole, then i would go to the Public Utilities Commission and present them with all this information... one thing we were told when fighting with our elec company, is that the PUC is supposedly the electric company's "boss"... good luck...

oh btw, we did purchase a kill-a-watt meter, and we found out our big electric suckers, but it ended up being one of the appliances that the rental company had in the apt already...

spidey: you need to read the fcking post before you go spewing sh1t out of your mouth. i have NO entitlement mentality and i hate it as much as you do. all i am saying is that IF the waterheater, hvac, or something the LANDLORD owns is busted...they should be responsible for remedying the problem...completely. as in, fix any errors it caused (such as my fcked up power bill) and get it working right. why should i have to pay because THEIR equipment is busted? that would be the same as going to get your tires replaced...and lets say for no damn reason the mechanic breaks his tool and a lug bolt on your car. is that your fault? no...should you have to pay for his tool or damage caused by it? HELL NO

marlin: i'm planning on doing that if the power co finds no problems
jeff: i agree...the CB should take care of shorted lines...its old, but not THAT old (maybe 10-15yrs)

gosh dang entitlement mentatlity makes me puke.

You are a moron.

If an appliance is malfunctioning (which is the rental company's responsibility) or something in the grid was affected due to the crash outside neither of those things are his fault.

Stupid "it hasn't happened to me yet so I have no empathy" conservative.

It has happened to me. I wasn't entitled to jack squat nor did I feel entitled to jack squat. Take some freakin' responsibility.

I think spidey is just reminiscing about last night's "waah, my toliet broke and the landlord should pay the bill thread" where the op was being a PITA.

If the power company doesn't find anything wrong with with the meter you might be liable for the bill. Good luck, keep us updated.

Sure, buddy. What's your address so I can send you a bill that you'll blindly pay?

If the power bill spike is due to something out of his control and falls under the responsibility of the landlord or power company then he should not be responsible to pay it -- PERIOD.

The landlord is responsible for maintaining the appliances in the home. If one of them begins drawing more power than it should and the landlord is informed as soon as the tenant is aware of the problem, then the landlord should fix the problem and help pay the increased electric bill (unless the tenant did something to cause the problem).

You're very critical of the OP's personal responsibility but what about the landlord or the power company? They're exempt from personal responsibility I take it?

sorry for the slow replies...tryin to work on a project
anywho......

dan: will do
soul, child: i agree...there is reason to be naturaly agressive towards posts such as this b/c a lot of the time there are morons who think because THEY did something wrong someone else should pay. Now, if i find out it is something i did or something i own that is causing the problem, i will pay it with no problem at all. but if it is the power co's fault, i expect them to adjust the bill. if it is the landlords ****** house or bad appliance, i expect the problem to be remedied quickly and they should pay for part of the bill. child said it very well...

spidey: i like how you PM'd me and expressed your feelings in a way to try and keep the fires down, i respect that...there is plenty of stupid fights going on around AT and being a contribution to it isn't the best thing...regardless, i still feel your logic is flawed. I understand where your thought process comes from but you need to look deeper into the subject and maybe you will understand why the others and myself feel that the landlord will be at fault in the case of a faulty appliance maintained by them or something with the house.

happened to me. On a cold month they said my gate was locked so they estimated the usage from my last few months. Then they got the real reading later on and just tacked it on.
