You're just screwed. We had a similar problem in a townhome we rented. We moved to a townhome in a different building and they didn't transfer our account to the right unit so we were getting billed for the electricity of someone else. 6 months later they call us and say "yeah, we weren't billing you for the right unit. You owe us $650 because you used more electricity than we billed you for. SURPRISE!!!"
We fought them (how we were supposed to know that we were using more electricity than we were getting billed for because they screwed up?), tried to negotiate the amount down, contacted the PUC.... they would not budge. We had to pay every penny.

Why would the landlord pay your bill if you used that much energy? How in the world can one believe somebody else is responsible. You use, you pay, you are NOT entitled.

You are a moron.
If an appliance is malfunctioning (which is the rental company's responsibility) or something in the grid was affected due to the crash outside neither of those things are his fault.
Stupid "it hasn't happened to me yet so I have no empathy" conservative.

Could be that the power company was just estimating in the past and now they got the actual number.
