Maybe I'm ignorant, but what the hell does boiling a frog have to do with being a sinner?????

It has to do with moving away from God and closer to hell. Obviously a devout person will object to a "big" sin like murder, but they may lie to safeguard someone's feelings. They build up the "little" sins, gradually building up immunity to the guilt of sin. Pretty soon they are so far into sin that they're going to burn (or boil, speaking of the frog) without realizing that they're getting hotter.
Makes sense logically, but it doesen't work like that in real life. Normal people don't have that problem, yet normal people tell so-called "little white lies", to safeguard someones feelings in your example.

I suppose it's a good message though, and something that everyone should practice whether religious or not.

You shouldn't have to use religion as an excuse to be a good person, ie: refrain from lying, cheating, stealing, etc.

Who cares? Sin all you like IMO, it's like money, kind of.
With money, spend it, you can always get some more.
With sin, well if the bad things come, move on and go elsewhere where you put the bad stuff behind.
<-- doesn't believe in any kind of afterlife.

same here. I wasn't asking if I should believe him though. I was asking if his metaphor about boiling frogs was true.

Christians say ridiculous things. Don't believe him.

says Lucifer.. lol

I think it doesn't really matter what you use to better yourself, as long as it is healthy. If you don't like religion, thats fine, but don't tell someone to stop being a good person just because they are using religion to accomplish that feat. Or don't make them feel inadequate because they are using religion to help condition their morals.

this is true.

if u heat the water at a slow rate the frog won't notice any change in temperature even when it's boiling.

this will happen to humans too.

(my physics teacher sez it's true at least...)

Subterranean Homesick Alien is the 3rd track on Radiohead's 'OK Computer' album.

yeah, the title is a nod to Subterranean Homesick Blues from 'Bringing It All Back Home'

Both are great songs on great albums, go buy them.

I would never tell someone to stop being a good person because they're using religion as an excuse to do it. I completely agree, it doesen't matter as long as it's healthy.

However, the question then becomes what "healthy" is. IMO, religious fanaticism is not healthy.

Lying to yourself should be one of the worst sins.. lol

Your physics teacher should stop being an asshat and refrain from commenting on biological matters (unless he is a quantum physicist and is talking about specific cellular processes).

There is more to living a good life than just the religious benefits often sited by Christians, or any religion for that matter. Those who have integrity and morals go far in life. All of a sudden you can be trusted and if you are in any situation where you are called on to make a desicion you receive a greater amount of respect based on your integrity. If there is anything that shouldn't be lost it's a person's integrity, because once it is lost it is very difficult to regain again. "Sin" is just a method in which integrity can be easily lost. Religious people view sin as a list of commandments from an all powerful being, but the non-religious look on "sin" as a violation of individual rights and there are laws written to explain the rights. Even if you don't believe in eternal consequences, ie God's judgement, there are still consequences of every desicion you make. Make the decisions that lead to greater integrity and be remembered for something other than drugs, crime or whatever. My ultimate goal is to be remembered after I die as a man full of integrity and a great husband and father.
