I am thinking of putting together a BOINC box with

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 1GHz FSB 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor

1Gb High Performance RAM

It runs at 2.2GHz ...

What do you folks think ... a waste or will it really crank???

I own a X2 3800+ and this baby smokes! Any special reason why you'd go for a 4400+ mondo? The 3800+ers are so good to overclock, it's not even funny. I managed to get my 3800+ up to 2,4 GHz on stock air cooling, prime stable for 24h. Then I backed up a little bit and now it has been running with 2,2 Ghz - like a 4400+ - for two months straight and no problems.

The only reason I could think of why you want a 4400+ is the Toledo core and the 1MB cache each core, but from what I've read, that increased cache doesn't really boost performance that much. Yes, some special application will go a tad faster, but I doubt that things like BOINC would benefit much in comparison to the money you have to spend extra to get a 4400+ instead of a 3800+.

Summary: X2s rock and leave Ds in the dust!

EDIT: Unless of course you want to overclock that 4400+ and go for 2,8 GHz

@Smoke Show-off

Mondo, have you considered an Opteron 165/170 instead. They are totally gone on those in the CPU forum.
Should overclock at least as good, and should be cheaper(? well not here in denmark, but in the us).
They also all come with 2x1MB cache, only problem is the lower multiplier.

yeah, the x2's are great, or the optys although theres a rumor in the cpu forum that amd will be selling them in systems only soon so get them now if you want.

they also seem to run alot hotter than the x2's from what i've seen but wither way you'll have a lot of crunching powa.

lol at the "monkey with the abacus"

No real advantage to Windows 64, unless you need 4gb or greater of ram. If they ever released a 64bit version of BOINC there might be an advantage though.

I built it as advertised with the Windows 2003 Professional (essentially 64 bit XP with improvements). I did my standard tweaks on the OS and disk setup so it moves a bit faster than standard.

This thing absolutely rocks! I can OC to about 2.7 but I backed it off to a bit less than 2.6 ...

It crunches SETI BOINC like a demon. I can't get the newest version to install but the older one works.

It is doing a work unit, job, whatever one calls it in BOINC quicker than 1 per hour ...

It is really, really snappy!

Any good guides to tweaking tips for your machine? I've got a new machine and it's been two years since I put my last personal machine together.

To anyone considering an x2, look at the Opteron 165 / 170. The Opterons are cheaper, 2mb L2, and oc just as well if not better then the x2?s. I got a poor stepping 170 that did 2.4 at stock vcore. Did 2.8 prime stable x2, and I haven?t tried higher. I?ve been running at 2.6 for a few weeks while running Boinc Rosetta. I haven?t had time to fully test the limits, and don?t really want to disrupt my crunching. All for $400 shipped (boxed not oem).

The mobo that I purchased was inexpensive and did not support an Opteron ...

but thanks for your continued suggestion.

They started socket 939 Opterons a little while ago. I think the dual core ones just came recently and are starting the real buzz.
