BOINC installation issues...

Since SETI Classic is for the most part come to an end, I decided to switch back to BOINC and for some reason it wasn't working, so I reinstalled it. After reinstallation, I can't seem to get past the "Select Computer" option, with it telling me that "BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client."

I select "local host" for the computer. That's what I find in other instructions as the correct setting.... I also allow BOINC Manager and boinccmd through the Firewall.

I'm using the latest version of the program, 5.2.12. What am I missing here?

I know someone here has an answer for me.

I got that same thing, "BOINC Manager is not able to connect to a BOINC client." recently too.

In my case, it was in upgrading the E@H client from 4.19 to 5.2.8; with an upgrade, you have to uninstall the old Boinc client, then install the new version, but when I tried that, I got the same message that you're getting.

After doing some reading and not finding anything, I found that I was able to upgrade to 5.2.2 as an intermediary step, and then upgrade to 5.2.8. Not sure of the reason, although I suspect it has something to do with the login process. Sometime after 5.2.2 the process got changed to a login with email and a password, rather than putting in a website and that long string of numbers/letters for the project.

So my suggestion is to try an older version like 5.2.2 first -- I know for a fact that it works.

Well, haven't had any problems when installed BOINC as service, so not sure what it is...

But anyway, v5.2.13 is released, with 3 changes:
Localization updates.
Network communication failure page added which describes basic ways to resolve common networking issues.
Fixed a timing issue where the manager would look for the password file before the client actually created one.

Bob, I ran into a similar problem yesterday and also was puzzled.

I ended up un-installing BOINC, re-booting, and then doing a fresh install that seemed to fix whatever the problem was. Give that a shot.

Yes, that would definitely be a problem!

The screensaver will not look exactly like the "classic" did, but you can change some preferences and get more close look-alike, see here

As for dialup-settings, this depends if you wants it to auto-dial at will or manually connect...

Anyway, atleast around here dialup is paid by the second, so if I've been forced to use dialup would never let anything auto-dial.
This would mean:
Connect to network about every
(determines size of work cache; maximum 10 days) atleast 2 days, would not recommend higher than 7 if you're not routinely offline for a week...
Confirm before connecting to Internet?
(matters only if you use a modem) no
Disconnect when done?
(matters only if you use a modem) no
Maximum download rate: no limit
Maximum upload rate: no limit
Use network only between the hours of
Enforced by versions 4.46 and greater (no restriction)

In BOINC Manager, would when dialed-in choose "Commands - Network activities based on preferences", wait for all uploads-downloads to finish, possibly report one more time, and afterwards "Commands - Network activity suspended" till next time connects...

So, depending on if you wants to let it auto-dial or something, you can change the preferences. To not let the client dial-up for each wu, you can limit with "Use network only between the hours of ...". The choise is really up to you...

..thanks very much for the help. I'am going to set it up so it advises me that it needs attention when it finishes a data unit..then I can dial out as necessary to return the data and get another unit. That's how I had it set up with seti classic.

I finally got the program to work by installing it as a service. I tried that originally but couldn't remembe the password for my log in so I was not able to complete the installation. I never got it installed as single user" or "shared user" for some reason, but whatever... heheh...

Now, I am trying to attach to the Seti@home project .... It won't attach. Any clues as to why? Anyone else having trouble getting work to work on?

I've been working on my grandson's computer and just tried to download BOINC without success. I am guessing that they are probably having server problems at the moment and that might explain why you are having troubles "attaching" a project.

And good morning TeAm.

Yes, the SETI@home/BOINC data-server seems to currently be swamped...

Hmm, according to the status-page the upload/download-server was disabled for a short time, so maybe a quick re-start of Apache or something has hopefully fixed the problems...

Anyway, on Wednesday they moved downloads of the BOINC-client from the BOINC-server to the SETI@Home/BOINC-ul/dl-server, since all the client-downloads was interfering with the rest of Berkeley campus-traffic. This of course increased the load on the SETI@Home/BOINC-server even more.
Maybe moving client-downloads to the "classic"-data-server would have been a better idea...

The latest version is 5.2.14, just released this morning to try to address this issue I am having. It should be available....

But I still can't attach to a project.

This is what I get for messages....

I don't do boinc seti but you can alway try to attach to another project like Rosetta and if that works then you know the problem is most likely with the seti servers.

We are experiencing heavy traffic on our data server. This is preventing some workunit/core client downloads. We are working on the problem.

So, one possibility is they've swamped with requests.

Another is you've got a connection-problem, firewall or anything that screws-up.

Can you do a tracert to setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu

If you tries to open http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi in a web-browser, does you get a "403 Forbidden"? If not, it's no wonder the BOINC client can't access the server...

Does "attaching" to another BOINC-project work?

I've been looking into this and it seems like a problem with packet size or something like that. Not sure what the solution will be but I'll gonna wait a bit before doing anything else.

I did a tracert to setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu and it works fine, and the firewall is open to boinc.exe and boincgui and boinccmd.

When I try to open http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi in a web-browser, it does give me a "403 Forbidden"? That's not the problem.

I'm gonna try Rosetta for awhile and see if that works. I'l just wait a bit and see if they come up with a solution.

It's weird though.. I did have BOINC working for SETI for awhile months ago. I don't know what changed between then and now, but it doesn't work. But oh well...
