Two 10th Mountain Division snipers took out an enemy target over a mile away during a firefight in Afghanistan.
That's close to 500 meters farther than the estimated effective range of their MK-13 sniper rifles.
The account of the feat is included in a story by Sgt. Rob Frazier of the 5th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment.
He says that during a firefight, six insurgents were spotted on a hill, one of them carrying a Rocket-propelled Grenade.
At a range of 1,696 meters, Spc. Jonathan Perrell served as spotter and Sgt. Patrick Polley pulled the trigger, eliminating the target.
The MK-13 has an estimated effective range of 1.200 meters.
Perrell and Polley earned the thanks of 10th Mountain Division Commander Maj. General James Terry who visited 3rd BCT troops on the ground in Afghanistan last week.
