BOOT ERROR (HD)

Hello all,
I have a Maxtor 20g hd on a FIC pag2130 mb w/ a bunch of memory. On bootup when the hd is checked sometimes it comes up as "NOVUS", instead of actually finding the hd.
When this happens the computer locks up, and it does not happen everytime.
Any suggestions?
