Boot issues

Hi all,

My computer officially won't boot up at all and I believe it is a mb issue.

Historical issues:

1) My motherboard/video card has had issues when turning on it wouldn't recognize the monitor until I shut down and restart it multiple times. This time it won't turn on at all for several days.

2) When I used to put my computer to sleep it would randomly awaken during the night for no reason at all.

I am looking at upgrading to an i7 4790k over the next week or so, but I would like to be able to access my HD for some files/folders I had on there. Any ideas how I can get the monitor to be recognized or where I should start trouble shooting this?

Specs below:

i7 920
Gigabyte MB (don't have the model in front of me)
8gb of Crucial ram
ATI 7970
500GB 7200 rpm seagate HD

Just to be clear the whole system turns on, but the monitor just won't every awaken. I guess it could be booting, but I just don't know.

Could be a motherboard issue, a power supply, a video card, or even VGA cable. We need more info. Is it overclocked? Have you tried a default BIOS reset of the motherboard?
Double check all cables.. Try plugging it in to a different electrical outlet..

If you are pretty sure it is up, just not getting video to the screen, it probably would be fine to get files off of if you attach it to the network and use remote desktop and shared folders.

If I clear the CMOS by taking the battery out will that affect my windows 7 install? When I get home I am going to try and move the video card to another slot and re-check the cables.

well firstly i would make shure all your leads are in good working order if you can check the screen on another machine and see if the screen checks out ok ...second try another video card that is known to work failing this 3rd disconnect the hdd and whatever other cards are in the machine..it may well be a power supply issue..as u have not said what power supply u r using..so as a bare bones ..mobo and video card and pwr supply and keyboard.. does the unit fire up if not i would first get another power supply. but i would not pass the chance that the mobo may be the culprit .also i would check to see if you have the latest bios.installed..also check to see if there is a bios for your video card i had an issue with an ati gigabyte "video card" that i fixed with a bios update for the r7 900 ...

Like phase said, check the monitor first. I had a similar issue with a screen and I ended up having to change 2 capacitors in the screen and all is good now.
