I have a friend that asked for my opinion and I am not sure on the answer so figured I would post it here.
His hard drive in his computer is a SATA WD hard drive running Windows XP. He said he has had it for several months and everything has been perfectly fine. Recently however, every once in a while he gets a "reboot and select proper boot device" when he turns his computer on. He said the only way around it is by unplugging the computer for a few minutes and trying to turn it on multiple times.
I told him to run Western Digitals diagnostic program and he said the extended test as well as the quick test both passed.
What could be causing the problem? Is his motherboard or SATA controller on the motherboard going bad? Could the SATA cable be bad itself or the port on the motherboard?
