Boot Sector Virus/Problem

Ok, i figured out the problem with my cd drives disapearing from windows xp. I talked to Microsoft and they said partition magic put something in the boot sector of my new 15 gb hd and that it went to my main 40 gb hard drive too. They said to take out the 15 gig and format the 40 gig, reinstall and so on. And my cd roms have not disapeared so far. Now there is a problem, I have about 500 MP3's on the 15 gig that is not connected. If i connect it ,the boot sector thing will just travel to the 40 gig again. Is the a dos program that will delete the boot sector so i can connect it and go into windows to transfer the mp3's?

That's a very good question. I would be inclined to try this -

Connect ONLY the 15 GB drive with the boot sector virus. Then boot using a good anti-virus emergency boot disk (NAV's CD is bootable - McAfee prepares such diskettes.) Then attack and clean out the virus. If that is done, you can go about life as normal.

Otherwise, you may have to use DOS XCopy and copy the MP3s to whatever you can.

Another solution would be to boot using Partition Magic's emergency boot diskettes and do a partition copy from the contaminated drive to the good drive - only copying the MP3 partition and leaving the boot sector alone. Partition Magic, Drive Copy or Drive Image will all do that from DOS with their own emergency diskettes.
