Boot-up Blue-screen Blues

Recently, there has been a chain of mildly catastrophic computing events in my rig, so I'll try to make it short so as to not run anyone off.

First I tried to install a Duron 1.2Ghz chip to replace my old 700Mhz Duron in my KT133 motherboard. Perhaps I'm an idiot for doing so, but I simply took off the heatsink, installed the chip, put it back on, and attempted to boot.

Well, it turns on, but that's it. the monitor gets no video at all, and the LED code shows it turned on, but couldn't start chipset intialization.

My theory is that the 700Mhz and 1.2Ghz Duron cores are different, and the Kt133 can only take the spitfire core. (both chips had the same pin conifguration, BTW). But is it something else? (I am no computing guru, trust me)

So I install back the trusty 700Mhz chip, and a couple hours and 6 Sunkist orange sodas later, everything is up and running again.

Except for one thing. The blue screen of death every time it boots up. I just can press any key, the blue screen disappears, and it then boots to windows, and everything is normal. But I tried installing Warcraft III, (after all of this), and it won't run because of an error about the CD not being in the CD drive even when it is. I actually think this is because of this blue screen problem, even though there aren't any other visible effects.

So to sum it all up, (hopefully someone is still reading ) how do I get rid of this blue screen short of formatting my HD? The whole CPU imbroglio can wait for now, but any suggestions there are also welcome.

P.S. the blue screen error number is something like "error 00000304D". Maybe that rings a bell for someone.

Just some things to check:

Make sure you have the heatsink on in the correct direction and that it is touching the CPU correctly.

Make sure you don't have too much or not enough Thermal Paste

In order for that 1.2 Duron to work you probably need to update your BIOS to the latest version

Ok, thanks for the tips. But my primary concern is that annoying blue screen with my 700Mhz Duron. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Check the system devices in device manager. something there might have changed and isn't initalizing properly
