Boot up problems with FOP38

Ok, my layout is
900 Tbird, A7V, 256mb, GF2 GTS 32mb,

I had a simple Coolermaster HSF, it did alright but the cpu stays at bout 55c with that thing. So I decided i needed some more cooling so i got the FOP38 and some Arctic Silver, before i did this my system booted up fine, very quickly, once it got to the desktop it was basically ready to go. Now after i changed HSF and applied Arctic Silver, when it boots up its very slow, once it gets to the desktop it can be up to 5 minutes before its ready, but then its pretty much the way it always was. Ive tried loading defaults, changing mem, etc. I even tried to boot up in safe mode, but even after bout 8-10 minutes it still hadnt "finished loading" by that i mean if you tried to click or do anything it wouldnt respond, only if you hit c-a-d would it even do anything. Could a new HSF or Arctic silver cause this? btw the fop38 is loud as hell, heh

I,personally would change hsf to a GORB and use Artic Silver 2, being very careful in applying the thermal grease and the hsf.
If the GORB does not work well upon first installation, then reinstall turning 180 degrees first and with new thermal grease

gorbs suck...fact.

reinstall your coolermaster hsf and reboot...if u're getting the same problem, then's it's not due to the hsf...

if u don't, then the only thing i could think of is that the fop38 may be drawing too mcuh power, which is ridiculously odd...

anyway, give it a whirl ol' chap

ignore me..yes, that would definitely be in your best interest...

buy an orb...watch it's aesthetically appealing, yet performance-lacking, luster bewilder your imagination beyond belief..

then notice the considerably high cpu temperatures...

No, don't ignore him. There's no reason why he should go out and buy an INFERIOR HSF just to diagnose his problem. The FOP38 is vastly superior to the Gorb in cooling, so don't even bother wasting your money. I would go ahead and (if you're in the mood to swap HSF a few more times) try what nortexoid suggested, switch back to the Coolermaster, and see if it's actually the HSF causing the problem, or if it's something related to your installation of the GlobalWin.
Did you remember to remove the thermal pad (pink stuff) on the FOP38 before you smeared Arctic Silver on it and installed it? If not, take it off again, use a solvent of some sort to get it ALL off, then reapply AS and try again. How powerful is your power supply? Normally even the Delta Black Label 7K rpm shouldn't tax your PSU, but if it's unusually weak, I suppose it's possible. Let us know what happens...

Come to think of it Peabody, you didn't even recommend the right Thermaltake. The Chrome Orb (or Super Orb) is their HSF for Socket A. Thermaltake brought it out because people kept on crushing their AMD's with the Golden Orb.

thanks guys for the replies, yes i cleaned the FOP38 with paint remover (yes i cleaned that off too heh), i have an antec 300w, i tried unhooking some drives and what not and still the same problem, is it possible that i damaged the cpu enough as to only *slow* its boot up?

HMMM....do you have a PCI videocard lying around? I don't see why, but I suppose it could be the AGP bus. If you can, you may need to at some point reinstall Windows. I guess it's possible that you could have damaged some data on your hard drive. You did use non-magnetic screwdrivers, tools, etc. right? Have you tried the Coolermaster again? Also, are you plugging the FOP38 into the mobo header or the power supply header? You may want to try the power supply header (I think you'll need a connecter adaptor) instead. Good luck!

neuralfx how do you have the FOP-38 hooked up? if you have it on the fan header remove it from there, they burn out from using the FOP-38. it draws to much juice. there is 3 to 4 wire converter to hook it right into power supply. i would do it soon too that is the cooler i am using BTW

actually the mobo header should be completely OK to use...plus it monitors RPM, which is not a big deal, but good to have for several hardware monitoring reasons... (i.e. in case it fails)

i don't think the cpu could be damaged in a such a way as to ONLY degrade boot-up performance...doesn't make sense...

did u try installing the coolermaster again?...what cpu temp readings are u getting w/ the fop38?

Ok i have it plugged into the power supply, via the 3 to 4 pin converter. my cpu temp never reaches above 44c with the FOP38, and with the cooler master and an hour of UT, the temp is like 62c.
But, this is the really weird part, when i tried to boot to safe mode a few days ago, like i said it hung up and when i booted up It took me straight to bios safe mode because "your cpu hung for an extended period of time due to.." i cant remember if it said due to overheating or due to a bad clock setting, but its running and 900 like it has always been. I have gotten that error a few times since installing FOP38, but my temp is always like 44, while before i never had any trouble like that with it being at 55c (that was idle temp with coolermaster)

eh but anyway, could it be the way i applied the Arctic silver.. I actaully think i put a bit much on it come to think of it, could it be that "part" of the core is overheating and causing this, while the sensor still reads a low temp?

you should also make sure that the clip is not on backwards. if the clip is on backwards, it would cause your cpu to over heat(possibly) but from the sounds of it, its not the HSF but i would defintely try and use the old HSF and see what happens. good luck.
