booting w/out ps/2 mouse in win98

I'm trying to boot into windows 98 with a usb mouse without using a ps/2 one. But, I get an error that no ps/2 mouse is detected when windows starts up. The message says to change a setting to "don't detect" but I can't find it. The real problem is that the keyboard does not work when I get this error,so just clicking "ok" is not enough. The usb mouse is a logitech cordless optical with mouseware installed. I know that I can use the adapter to use it as a ps/2 mouse, but I want to use the usb connection. Can some one tell me how to get windows to cooperate?

First thing I would check is to see that your bios, most likely, will have something to the effect of "enable legacy usb" - Make sure this is enabled since this is what allows the OS to look other places for human interface devices...

Depending on your bios, there might be 2 things to look for. As Johnny said, there should be a setting in the IRQ section to provide an IRQ to USB devices. Set that to "Enable". Additionally, in my bios there's another setting for the USB Keyboard, in particular. It gives me the option to have it initialized by the bios itself OR by Windows. Choose the Bios option, if you have it. This way you can always get into the bios at bootup time rather than waiting for Windows to initialize your usb keyboard. Just giving it an IRQ is not enough, depending on your motherboard.

And, of course, you'll have to make these changes with a regular ps/2 keyboard until you have it set up because you won't be able to get into the bios with your usb keyboard until you specifically make the changes necessary to it's initialized by the bios. The old catch-22.
