Bootup OS choice menu has an old listing

I decided I don't like Windows 2000 being on my D drive, so I moved it to my E drive. I just renamed the D drive Windows directory through Win98, and proceeded to install Win2k to the E drive. Unfortunately, I still have a residue 'Windows 2000 Professional' bootup option on the OS select menu upon starting the computer. There's actually two of them now, the main one works, and is for my E drive copy. Is there any way to remove the listing for the non-working D drive copy of Win2k?

Search for 'ntldr'. Boot.ini should be in the same directory. Make a copy of it before editing ... just in case.

To remove the extra entry from your boot menu you'll want to edit your boot.ini file which resides in the root of your C:\ partition. By default it's attributed as a hidden system file. In order for explorer to list it in Win2k you must enable the viewing of hidden files and disable the "hide protected operating system files" option through explorer's folder options menu. You could also simply use the command prompt and the attrib command to change the file attributes to enable you to edit the file with the edit command or with notepad. Once you've opened boot.ini in a text editor delete the line which points to the unwanted boot menu entry.
As an example here's my boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
timeout=8
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server" /fastdetect
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:"

Unless you've got a scsi setup with the bios disabled you can ignore the multi (0) disk (0) part. The rdisk (0) value indicates the operating system is on the first hard drive (this value counts up from 0). The partition (1) value indicates that the operating system is on the first partion (C (this value counts up from 1). Assuming your D: partition is the second partition on your first hard drive you'll want to delete the line which should read something like this:
multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional: /fastdetect. I'd make a copy of your boot.ini before you change it just in case you make a mistake and delete the wrong entry.
Hope this helps!
Good luck!
