winXP on my a64 3000+ slows down *immensely* once its running. antivir starts then nothing else works. mouse moves. but when the mouse cursor is over the startmenu, i see an hourglass.

very very very slowly, i see some of my programs load on the systray. and when i click on programs, it takes minutes (5min? 10min?) for them to load. what is going on? task manager show very little cpu activity. i dont hear the chatter of the hdd in the case.

anybody knows what is going on?

What kind of processes do you see when you look at your task manager? Anything suspicious?

CTRL-ALT-DEL -> Task Manager -> Processes.

This will show you usually what is taking up the most memory/CPU power.

Also, normally what do you have launch on start up? If you haven't done so already, start using some anti-spyware tools such as AdAware or Spybot S&D.

i will try to look at the taskmanager processes. it'll probably take 30min to do that

from the first tab of taskmanager. i can see <10% cpu utilization and memory doesnt look too bad (cant remember exact number). i'm wondering if its the memory actually, cos i just took out my stick of 512 and put in 2x512.

on startup, i have zonealarm and anti-vir running.

Look at the drivers you are using, update as required and what ever is running in msconfig, start-up tab. Isolate these one at a time until you locate the offender.

looks like its the ati catalyst drivers!

i gave up searching one by one and re-installed windows. then put in software etc one by one. when i installed the newest catalyst 6.11 drivers, it happened! so i sent ati a nasty email.

so the question now is, how do i uninstall the drivers and generic windows display drivers? whatever i tried didnt seem to work.
