I recently got myself a Dell 2001FP LCD monitor which I find to be superb.. That being said, I've hooked it up using DVI as opposed to using D-SUB since DVI should give me a better overall picture.. What I've realized since is that when my PC boots, I no longer see the bootup process.. The LCD remains black until I get to my Windows XP login.. Now, most of the time, this is just fine, but for those days where I'd want to get into my BIOS setup, it's a problem.. My guess is that the DVI signal from the video card doesn't get "initialized" until Windows XP has loaded the necessary drivers.. I'm assuming if I had it hooked up via the D-SUB it would react like a regular CRT, ie.. I WOULD see the bootup process.. I haven't actually tested that, it's an assumption I'm making that I'd like confirmed.. That all being said, what are my options..? Could I hook up both cables to my LCD/video card and select (via the source button on my LCD) which signal I wanted, default being DVI, but for those times I'd want to see the bootup process, I could switch it over to D-SUB..? Any comments would be appreciated.. Thanks.

P.S. It's not that I can't test any of these scenarios, but would rather just have my assumptions confirmed before going ahead with anything..

What video card do you have? I'm using a 2001FP right now on my 6800GT (DVI of course), and I see the boot sequence just fine...

I see BIOS and everything just fine with my 6800NU hooked up to my 2005fpw.

However, I know some ATI cards have issues with DVI and things like BIOS screens. Not sure if new ones do or of it is just things like 9600s.

I'm using my Radeon 9600xt's dvi output and I see the bootup screen.

That being said, I don't notice any difference between dvi and vga. Maybe it's my subpar lcd? Oh well.

Hmmm, ok, so I'm the only one with this issue.. LOL.. Well, I have an XFX GeForce 5900 Ultra 256Mb AGP /w the 66.93 drivers.. My motherboard is the Asus P4C800-E Deluxe.. Thing is, I ONLY have the DVI-D hooked up, but I assume some of you have that ONLY hooked up as well.. I guess I'll have to do some tests of my own using my D-SUB connector as well.. Ciao.

Well, I haven't had the time to do the D-SUB tests which I'm sure will allow me to see the bootup process when switching the monitor using it's source button to D-SUB.. Even if that works, it seems some (everyone?) sees their bootup process using DVI only.. I'm a bit confused as to why this is the case for others, but not for me.. There's got to be an answer to this issue..

Yes -- you have a GeForce5 card that doesn't display on the DVI during bootup. This is a well-documented problem with certain video cards, and someone asks about it (usually in the Video forum) every few weeks. There's no fix other than possibly a BIOS update for the card if one is available.
